decision calls?

i applied early to uva, but unfortunately, i got deferred. i'd like to know uva's basis for this decision, for my benefit to try to get in regular later and when applying to other colleges. good thing is, dean j talked about how uva will accept what are called "decision calls" starting this coming monday, as he states in his uva application blog ( http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/ ).

my questions are:
-would it be better to write them an email instead of calling? (if they even accept that)
-what kind of questions would you guys ask?

Give yourself a week or so to evaluate your application and why you think you were deferred. If you didn't get in because you simply were a marginal candidate, then I don't know what you can do besides showing continued interest.

how do you suggest i show continued interest? what are some different ways i can convince them to admit me later on without seeming arrogant?

i would call if i were you. a voice is better than words on a screen. prepare some questions like dean j said i guess, particularly about the deferred process, places they suggest you improve on, etc. dont be boohoo

Like I said, read threads on the topic that will pop up here over the next few months. Keep the admissions office updated on any interesting developments in your life and make sure to submit a letter of interest (why UVA is the school for you).

I was deferred two years ago from a school a bit higher up the food chain from UVA and mailed in two letters, some updates and had my interviewer submit another letter. In the end, they were gracious enough to waitlist me. Oh well ;) .

I agree with cavalier302. I was waitlisted last year, but I still showed my interest in the school. I sent a letter explaining why UVA was the right school for me and how I would contribute to it. I also included some updates on my resume. Good luck.

how long were your letters? (in other words, how long is too long?)

bump......

I called today and they were kinda "cold" I guess you can say, the one guy I spoke to wasnt helpful at all...my luck. I dont know how I can further show them how interested and committed I am besides the essay

Talk with your guidance counselor. See if he or she can find out anything for you later this week or even next week. If you don't have a GC who can be of help, maybe an experienced teacher who has written a recommendation for you will call. At this point, you probably are going to have to rely first on a call that someone else makes for you (and the follow ups from that -- ask them to try to open a channel of communication for you) and then on watching this and similar threads from CC and getting ideas from them.

Good luck. I'm sad that the Admissions Office didn't help you.

thank you! I'll def try that tomorrow

So everyone is basically saying: Student should call first but if the questions aren't really answered then the counselor should give it a shot.

What questions are there to ask in the "decision call"? Other than the obvious: How can I improve my application? Is there anything else that I could send in?

What could the counselor possibly ask?

I made a call just now. The lady who answered was very nice and reasonable. Apparently my posts had been floating around the UVA office...

I'd expect that the counselor would ask many of the same things that a deferred applicant would.

The reasons I suggested having the counselor call were: 1) if you've already called and didn't learn anything helpful, it would be a chance for someone to take a second shot at it on your behalf without your having to get into being annoyingly (counterproductively) persistent, 2) the admissions people may be more likely to be candid with the counselor than they might be with a deferred applicant (and those two may speak more of a shared language of revealing hints than you and the admissions people are likely to do), and 3) a smart, experienced counselor may be able to put in a strong good word for a deferred applicant while at the same time gleaning helpful information that he or she can then use to start formulating a plan for the next step (whether that's leading to Virginia or to a stronger application/better fit elsewhere).

NolanDW -
I really admire you. I know it was a difficult call. You were really brave to make it. I hope that it was helpful.
Know that a lot of us are thinking of you and wishing great things for you.

Thanks for the kind words.

I posted some additional stuff in the Decisions thread.

so wats posted on here does get seen by the admissions office. hmmm

nolandw, where did you exactly call? (what was the phone number?)

1-(434)-982-3200.

Just stay on the line until an operator picks up. I think the offices are only open until 5 pm though (which is why I didn't call yesterday, due to track practice.) After the operator picks up, just say you're making a "decision call" and they'll find someone.

thank you!
