Don’t know if I should bother retaking. Seeing as I didn’t study and was not even acquainted with the format of the exam, I’m sure I could get a 35/36 by studying and retaking this upcoming fall. But is it worth the effort?
C: 34
E: 34
M: 31
R: 36
S: 35
W: not out, but probably pretty bad tbh
What worries me is the math score. I’m more STEM oriented, but is it really a problem?
@NikkuWadde I have no way of knowing, but I don’t think so. There is nothing on the ACTStudent twitter to indicate that.
It is possible hers was graded on an unusual schedule because she took hers at the school vs. a national testing site. Last time she took one at school, ACT told me it is graded by a different department.
For example, that test never shows up online until it is graded. (It never shows as tested, registered, or even existing until it posts.)
I just checked for my son’s writing score, and it is posted now. It was not up yesterday, and we checked several times throughout the day yesterday. He tested at a national testing site. C 35 but W28 He’s so upset.
My son has a 36C and only 29 for writing. He is still trying to decide whether to pay the $50 for a rescore. He will be applying to highly selective schools. I can’t quite get a handle on what he should do.
@rb681000 Around here I’ve read that they will not lower the score. They either raise it (and send back your 50) or it stays the same (and they keep the 50). It seems kind of ridiculous, but I will probably counsel my son to request the rescore just because he is stressing over it.
@CGHTeach and @rb681000
Hypothetically, yes, they could score it lower, but I would find that HIGHLY unlikely on the written side of things. ACT knows they have an issue and there is much anecdotal evidence of them raising up those writing scores.
The best news is the re-score request for the M/C and Essay are two separate requests, so there is NO chance that an essay re-score request will mess up a good composite score.
@CGHTeach - We are in similar situation. We don’t have writing score yet, but my daughter has 36C and not expecting a good writing score. She would have done better on writing next year after AP lang and all and more prep maybe. We already made up our mind to send for rescore for anything less than 30 but also have to explore with her guidance counsellor what she can do. She will take the SAT next year so maybe has to do better on the essay there.
how much do colleges actually care about writing scores? won’t they be able to gauge your writing skills more through your college apps and not a 40 minute act essay that asks about a trivial topic?
ELA score takes into account writing too so I guess it is looked by colleges. I was looking at the way UC score is calculated for California residents and writing is a deciding factor. I am not sure how it works at other colleges.
My D has 35C (35E 35R 34M 35S first time she took the ACT) but her W is 21. We are wondering whether she
should retake the test. Some of the schools she is interested in do require W. Any advice?
@rice2019 don’t have your daughter retake the test simply because of the writing score; if your daughter does really well in her high school English classes, as well as writes a very strong application essay, then colleges will see that the ACT writing score is an anomaly. As I have mentioned already in this thread, colleges are indeed aware of the low writing scores that ACT writers have been receiving as of late, and are beginning to take the writing section less seriously. Your daughter has an excellent composite score; you should congratulate her, move on to other college application requirements, and you shouldn’t have her retake the test.
@CheckMate123 Thanks for the advice. She is Junior this year. 4.0 unweighted. So far she took 6 APs + 3 Dual credit courses at the local community college. A good chance to be finalist for NMQST. On track to be 1st or 2nd in her class.
This Writing just got her down.I will convince to let it be, but I will definitely request rescore from ACT.
I simply can’t believe it’s taking this long to get a score back for the ACT no writing… If I don’t get it tonight I’m going to be having a date with the Ben and Jerrys.
No scores here either. I wonder if it’s possible to get the mailed score report before getting them online? ACT claims they are mailed to the students’ home address typically within 3-8 weeks. Well, it’s been 3 weeks…
