***April 2016 ACT Discussion Thread***

My daughter got a 36C, 36 E, 36 M, 35 R 35 S. Sophomore, first time test.

She also took the writing which she didn’t prepare much. So now wondering how low would she go on that. Can we avoid sending the writing score or retaking that part alone? We now regret having signed for writing. Anyone has ideas what would be the best approach in our case.

Well, darn…

My Feb. ACT results were 32C 34E 35M 33R 26S 30W and my April results are… almost the same.

32C 35E 34M 30R 29S Writing not known yet.

I actually felt more confident on this one but I’m not too sure how my Science is so darn low. Would be using a plethora of “colorful” vocabulary if it weren’t for CC’s strict cursing rules.

Should I even bother retaking the ACT? I got a 2270 (720CR 770M 780W) on the January SAT and my parents feel that this is more than enough to qualify me for a top school… Though I really wanted a 34. Help?

Honestly I would KILL for a 35 so con-freaking-gratulations to everyone who got that or higher!

Just received my scores this morning! 32C 35R 34E 28M 30S. Want to major in International Relations and Polysci, could scores like these get me into any well renound schools? Also this was my first time taking the ACT, is it worth it to take it again?

@svacnin - I think you should retake it. Since you have good English scores, math will be relatively easier to bring up. For us, what worked were the practice tests on ■■■■■■■■.com. There are only so many patterns of problems in Math. After 5 or 6 tests and reviewing them and studying where you are missing, it should be easy to get 33+ in Math provided you did reasonably well in your math classes in Middle school and so far. Science also can be brought up with enough practice.

I have a question regarding the strength of my essay score. I got a 34 Composite with: Eng:34 Math:36 Reading:30 Sci:36
But on the essay i got a 28. This brought my ELA score to a 31. Will my low essay score shoot up red flags to colleges? I am going into a STEM major for sure, but how does this affect my shots at a top tier college. I am currently a junior, should I retake?

@eljefe123 don’t worry about the essay score. The ACT has been giving extraordinarily low essay scores as of late, and colleges are aware of this. I know many people who have 35/36 composites and who are VERY strong writers in school, and nevertheless got 20-29 on the writing. Colleges are taking the ACT essay less and less seriously in admissions, and I honestly won’t be surprised to see the essay no longer be a requirement about a year from now. So as long as you’re doing well in your high school English classes, and you write a great college essay, the ACT essay should not be a huge concern. And 34 is a GREAT score; well done. Hope this helps.

Thanks! @CheckMate123

I still havent gotten my scores yet but all the other kids I know who took it at my center got theirs already. How did everyone fair on this test based on what they thought they got? I got a 29 composite last time and I am really looking for a 30+ (hopefully 31+). I saw some people say they were surprised by how high they got especially in science which is my weak point

Whoops, the ACT is really weird. Didn’t send me an email, had no idea my scores were out for like a week already…

Higher than predicted yay!

35 C
35 E
33 M
36 R
36 S

I’m really excited; this was my first time taking it as a sophomore and I seriously thought I got a 31. I have to take the PSAT//SAT next year though but I’m really happy I’ve got this great ACT score in by back pocket…even though the math is kinda low 0_0 I’m so bad at math tests even though I’m in the highest math class possible at my school…690 on SAT 2 lol

But that’s okay…I’ll only retake for super score if needed…

@LushLillies Congrats! How did you originally think you did on the science and reading?

@zxcvbnm1216
Thank you!
I posted on this thread initially after taking the test and predicted 33 E, 31 M, 32 R, 32 S for a composite of 31-32…so I guess they were all higher. Hopefully my essay wasn’t horrible; I know it wasn’t the best I could do though.

Did you take the test?

@LushLillies Yes I took it but I have not gotten my scores back yet. Hoping for a 31 but not sure how reading and science went.

@zxcvbnm1216 hmm I’m not sure about the process. I thought they said 5-8 weeks, so I didn’t even bother checking until I logged in and saw that a lot of people got their scores! it’s only been like 2 weeks since the testing though; I’m really surprised I got mine.

I’m sure you did great!

whats generally considered an acceptable essay score for a 35-36 composite? i didnt get my essay scores yet but i feel like i did pretty poorly, and even the good writers are getting low scores as well so i dont know how bad my scores will be. and do colleges care about individual sectional scores as well or mostly just composite score

@zxcvbnm1216 This was my first time testing, and I thought I did well, but not this well. Wasn’t expecting 75/75 in English! I’d put myself in the 33 composite range if you asked me beforehand.
Also, @2018graduatemom a sophomore 36 is insane!

My Daughter’s score just posted this morning. (For sure wasn’t up last night, but did post this morning.)

Good result for her. Composite up 2 points, and SuperScore up 1 point.

So she got her scores today, as in Thursday?

@NikkuWadde

Yes. That is correct. No scores posted on Wednesday (checked as late as 10 PM last night) but they were posted this morning (Thursday.) Weird, and unexpected.

Oh okay. Do you think that will affect scores coming out tomorrow? @CATDECAL
