Hey, this is a thread for all the appointees who went to the April 9/10 Orientation to share their experiences and gained knowledge, so that the rest of us who are going to the other orientation dates will know what to expect. I’m looking forward to seeing what y’all did and what you found out while at Orientation.

So, I’ll start with a question. Did you guys get 1 or 2 pairs of boots?

well i hosted someone who i met when i picked him up. he got one pair. we both had a good time. just heads up: the classes (depending on ur escorts schedule) can be very confusing and/or boring, so be prepared. also, there is not much to do during the week, so expect some down time of either just chatting, watching a movie, or something of the sort

My orientation went very well. I stayed with a cadet in the 4 squadron and he told me a lot about the place. The classes were very interesting...but yes very confusing. I'm scared of chemistry now :) Other than that, the "downtime" was pretty good time for questions or just chatting or what not. I did get two pairs of boots...figure if we're gonna get two anyway, why not.

Heads up for the first day, there is unlimited briefings in Arnold Hall... most of them contain important info, just be ready for a long day.

Wow. Thanks for the responses. My mom told me that she thought she had read somewhere that the Class of 2011 will have to have two pairs of boots for BCT and Dooley Year. I guess she's right.

Yeah, I know that we actually made "downtime" in my squad. I don't think much work got done in the evening...I certainly didn't get anything significant done!

Does anyone have the fax number we are supposed to send in our eyeglass prescription to? I thought I had the number already so I didn't write it down during the briefing. As you can tell I don't have the number. Orientation was great. I had a lot of fun. Can't wait until I-Day on June 28!

Yeah the most work I saw was the scramble for a chem lab...so good luck with that if you have it. We played Air Force Monopoly on the 'downtime' :)

As for the fax number, did you get that Spectalce Sheet? Theres a form you have to fill out for it. I never got the form in my packet so my parents were able to snag it at Orientation, the fax number is 719 333 7866. If you didnt get the form you could probably call and ask for one to be sent I guess, the phone number is 719 333 5189.

I was with a guy from the 11th squadron. It so happened that he was from the same state as me, what are the odds. Anyways. It was fun. Didn't go to the mail room though. The orientation is definately going to help me with my decision between USAFA and USNA. (The 7-8 hour long briefing was pretty ridiculous. I learned a few things, but not alot.) I'm going to Navy's orientation tomorrow.

Oh, and during the 7-8 hour long briefing, they covered a topic about contacts and glassware. And they specifically said not to bring contacts, but bring the prescriptions. Anyways, some parent in the crowd asked 20 minutes later whether to bring the contacts or not, or bring the prescriptions. I was kinda annoyed at how people don't listen.

Anyways, overall I thought the academy is alot more relaxed than thought out to be.

if u want silly questions, a parent my year asked if their son could leave during Basic training so they could celebrate his birthday with him... please understand what you're getting yourself into by coming here.

most likely. there are some 3 and 2 digs, and some firsties, who also host. i was talking with some firstie who had to pick up a kid fast cause he had a meeting with the commadant (she's a 1 star general). so some of you may have a little different experience

Hey Z-Man 07, we really need to talk about online identities, OK?

Anyway, there were lots of dumb questions asked in the briefings. One mom asked if she could send her kid a camera during Basic to get photos of what's going on.

Aside from all of that, I really enjoyed my time there. I noticed that the cadets complain a lot, but really actually like it. If you've been there, you probably know what I mean. I'm excited for this summer...kind of. :)

(Sorry ZMAN07 I didn't realize there was two of us ... hmm well I dont think we can change screen names from what I've read, but if I can I will since youre the senior Z. )

Anyway yeah it was only lax during orientation because the freshman were recognized. Prior to their spring break it was anything but relaxed.

I especially liked the schizo weather on Tuesday morning... good times.

"I especially liked the schizo weather on Tuesday morning... good times."
Welcome to Colorado. We specialize in unexpected rain, hail, and snow. If we say it's going to be warm, we really mean the opposite.
Be prepared for snow. LOTS of snow. In October. Or June. I'll laugh when it snows in June, though it did once.

"I noticed that the cadets complain a lot, but really actually like it. "

In general, yes. We do complain a lot. I don't know completely why, i guess that its just fun to. But yes, at least for me, i enjoy it here. Yes, there were times over the past 9-10 months (wow the time's flown by) where i asked myself why the heck i came here, because i hated it. but after having gone through everything, and completed Recognition, i would not give it up for anything. not too mention what i still have ahead (like jump in less than 2 months).

But most importantly, if you are undecided, make sure it is what YOU want to do. If you come here for someone else (like parents), then you will most likely be miserable.
