April Angst 2017

As of last night S has narrowed it down to two choices. Spring break is next week and he is hoping he can decide by the end of the break. Progress. S is still undecided on whether he’ll need a return visit to one of the two in order to make a decision but will weigh that over the next few days. H and I (privately) have a preference between the two but we think they are both excellent choices.

Whyyesheisabass my d is a vp major at hartt and absolutely loves it. The vp group is a small very tight knit group. The students look out for each other and the entire faculty is personally involved with every student. When my d was sick a year ago, her voice teacher called his own ent, set up an appointment and arranged for her to be driven to the doctor a day later.

She is my first borne and we live in California so I can appreciate the concern of distance. We are pretty intertwined and talk every day (no judging:). However during my first visit for her fall recital I was simply amazed at how independent she had become. This past year she studied voice abroad in Vienna Austria. Being away and in a secure and warm environment has done more to mature and develop her personality than I can articulate.

Good luck with whatever you choose, but if you come to Hartt, we may run into each other.

@whyyesheisabass CIM is in her top 3. They gave her a very nice scholarship, but hoping for more! Going to Mannes and Peabody this week to see the voice teachers.

@classicalsaxmom I can definitely relate to your “angst”! D is also a classical saxophonist. She applied to 4 schools, was waitlisted at her 4th choice and accepted at her top 3. She made her final decision and notified everyone within the past day or so, and I’m not sure who among us is most relieved! Best of luck to you guys, we’ve learned that this part of the process is almost worse than waiting to hear about acceptances!

Two return visits scheduled. One this weekend to a school that was an “in and out” auditon because of our schedule. We hope to get a better feel for it all while there. The second is the one school he wasn’t able to audition in person - that will be in two weeks. He feels like he got a good handle on what the rest of the schools had to offer on his auditon trips, so that’s it (our bank account is pleased about that).

So we have two weeks until the data gathering finally comes to an end and a decision can be made. My gut is starting to tell me something, but my gut has been wrong a lot during the last year, so I’m telling it to shut up.

@Sguti40 I hope we do! It seems that everyone that goes to Hartt loves it. Thank you - maybe distance is a positive… you have no choice but to get it together. Because I stayed pretty close to home, I could get a rescue if I needed it.

S’s decision is made and deposit is paid, the merit package has been accepted, and all profs notified. S is headed to Eastman this fall!

Congratulations to your S, @classicalsaxmom! What a wonderful place.

@classicalsaxmom Congrats!

@classicalsaxmom, congrats to your son! I was on my way to Shanghai on business last year and met a bunch of students all carrying saxophone cases – not a common scene – and found out that it was the Eastman Saxophone Project embarking on a 2-week tour of China. I sat next to a few of them on the flight. They seemed like such a great close-knit group of kids. That’ll be your son next year!

Wonderful news, @classicalsaxmom ! Congrats!

Thanks all! @ScreenName48105 cool story about the Shanghai trip - they are a great group. The studio even took auditioners out for a pizza dinner after auditions and answered questions and talked about their experiences as students. We watched their concert live stream earlier this week and I think that sealed the deal with S.

Alright y’all. Heading out for the final visit today. I really hope he will have a decision made before the weekend is out. My daughter, a high school junior, is already planning her college lists and visits for the summer. I need to get one done before I start on the second or I might lose my mind!

@BassTheatreMom Excited to hear the final result! And I was just thinking that the juniors are getting serious about their lists around now. Would be tough to have two consecutive seniors - maybe even harder than having twins which has about done me in! My musical son is thisclose to a decision but waiting on a financial aid adjustment expected next week. Almost there!

Good luck to @BassTheatreMom and @Midwestmama17 as you head into the home stretch!

Good luck to all those still to decide. I don’t think my D decision will happen until deadline. She is leaning towards a top tier school that has provided generous awards but still a big financial sacrifice for us. Another school is very interested in her but has not provided the final award package and will not until close to deadline. If finances don’t work out, the instate Conservatory still is a great option for her as she will be in a great performance career teacher studio. Best wishes to all!

Best wishes everyone, @BassTheatreMom , @Midwestmama17 and @coloraturadad , and I hope you can all hang in there for the next few days/weeks!! I think you know I’m pulling for your D and that that top tier school will give you All The Extra Money @coloraturadad !!!

Does anyone know anything about transfer application? I am waiting on NYU and Rice, both said will release result by May 1st. I auditioned in Febuary, and the journey of waiting is killing me.

If you haven’t heard anything yet, it’s alright to contact the schools and inquire…

S has it narrowed down to two schools, and is having a hard time letting go of either of them. He tried to get me to tell him what to do last night, lol! He knows my opinion, his dad’s opinion, his private teacher’s opinion, his orchestra director’s opinion and his girlfriend’s opinion. But I told him those are opinions only. We all got to choose our own colleges and the final decision is all him. So right now he has chosen the school that none of the rest of us prefer, lol! He asked them for a bit more money, so we will see where that leads. What a ride!
