APs and Med School

I have read the FAQs and "Important" threads at the top of this forum regarding this subject, but still have questions. I plan on taking approximately twenty AP tests, and hope to use the credit I get from this either to graduate early from college or possibly pursue a master's degree in biochemistry in the normal four year duration. The way that I can accomplish this, of course, would be AP credit for electives and required first-year courses. I know that I MUST take General Biology freshman year in College regardless of my AP score, but am wondering if I must retake other AP courses, namely Calc I and II, Statistics, English, Physics, and General Chemistry. I do not plan on attending one of the "best" med schools as Harvard/John Hopkins, but wish to be admitted to a local med-school. With this, I know it is school specific, but will there be any courses, besides Bio, that I must retake in College despite AP performance? Many thanks for assistance and help.

Your best course of action would be to contact the admissions director at your state medical school and ask him or her. There is no uniform policy that all medical schools follow regarding AP credits. Be sure to get the reply in writing and KEEP it.

It also may depend upon how your college records your AP credits on your transcript. If they record them as uncategorized or general credit, then it’s less likely that med schools will accept them. If they record them as equivalent to courses offered at your college, you have a stronger case to have them accepted.

I would venture that regardless of how your English AP is recorded, you will still be required to take 1 or 2 writing intensive courses regardless of the AP English score. (I know D1 who is at our state med school had to have 2 additional writing intensive classes despite placing out of 2 semesters freshman comp due to her AP. Both her uni and the med school required it.)

It depends on the Med school…those that will accept AP credits generally require that your college transcript reflect the UG university’s course number and name/description for the course that the AP credit is replacing.
