Im a bit confused on how AP tests work at community colleges and transferring. Now my cc offers credit for a course (like a score of 3 or above on Biology gives you credit for Bio. 3). When transferring, do UCs recognize Bio 3 from the community college or the score of the AP exam?

For example, to complete the IGETC, I need one lab science and my AP Bio score gives me credit for Biology 3 (lab science) at my CC. But for AP Bio exams, according to

UCLA's College of Letters and Science
"Biology - Cannot be applied toward general education requirement."

If thats true, should I take an actual lab science course at my CC rather than rely on AP Biology score to avoid taking "additional" courses once at the uni. to fill general ed. requirements?

If you complete the IGETC, you wont need to take any more GE courses after you transfer.

your AP biology score of 3 (or higher) will fulfill one category of IGETC science requirement. Once you fulfill your IGETC, UCs don't care about your APs.

don't you have to send the UCs a copy of your AP scores as well? Or is that if we are exempted from a course using an AP exam score at our CCC, is that basically all that the UC adcoms will look at?

I had a score of 3 on my AP Calc AB test, and if I can save some units for my courseload without it affecting me, I'd be more than happy to do it. Also I'm a humanities major (English) so I'm assuming that a score of 3 wouldn't could so much against me as long as I actually passed the exam....

ALL with 3. Of course, UCLA won't accept a score of 3 for some AP exams, so I was at first worried. But I asked the counselor regarding the AP credits.
My counselor personally contacted the UCLA admissions office regarding the issue, and she got a response from UCLA admissions official there that if I use the AP credits to fulfill some of the IGETC requirement, then I'll have no problem in the future. That's the advantage of IGETC. If you have score of 3 for any AP exams, they can be used to fulfill some of the requirements for the IGETC.

That's how i get to skip English 101 and went straight to English 103 (UCLA BizEcon pre-req). However, UCLA demanded a letter grade for pre-reqs, meaning they won't accept AP credits for those, so I had to take Calculus I (although that's not the only reason why i took it) even though I passed it with AP exam.

So yeah, take advantage of your AP credits. Because of AP credits, I've already had like 5 IGETC courses done before I even started my first year at cc. Hope this helped!

waits for CardinalFocused to rip my post apart

I know you cant (well not recommended) use ap scores for pre-reqs or so my counselor says (Im guessing UCs want to see actual grades)

So its like this

Pass AP Exam (3 or above) -> CC gives credit for a certain course -> Certain course fills IGETC -> UC acknowledges and accepts -> GE done with when transferred (if IGETC is completed)?

dhl3, ucla really don't accept ap's for major requirements? does that mean i have to take the class again at the ccc? also, there is a part in the transfer application where u put all ur ap's and its scores. what are those for? also, i heard that ucla accepts ap art history with 4 or 5 to satisfy two major requirement courses for art history. what u mean, i think, is that for every majors, it's different: some majors accept ap's, some do not. anyway here are my scores:

10th: euro hist 3
11th: us hist 5
12th: art hist 5
psych 5
stat 3 (very pathetic subject. i learned nothing in this class, never did homework, never participated in class exercises)

if you look at the articulation agreement on assist, you'll see if you can substitute an ap score for major prep. course (it will say in the beginning) . I've been told its much better if you actually take the course though. (counselor)
