APUSH or AP Lang? Can't decide

I’m a sophomore, and this will be my first AP class. Right now, I do Honors English (93) and Honors World History (98). Because my school has limited space in these classes, you have to apply for these classes. My history teacher believes I would do well in APUSH, but I know that if I do APUSH, my grade will drop a little in class, due to it being a harder class. The reason why my English grade isn’t that high is because I had 94’s both quarters, but a 92 on the midterm. The class average was around an 85. My English teacher never gives my papers a 100 or anything but always a 90-95, and she writes stuff on my paper when she sees something she likes. As far as I know, she doesn’t do that to every kid’s paper. I definitely don’t want to do both because, you know, AP classes require work.

I forgot to mention that my English teacher recommends those above an 85 average to consider applying to AP Lang.

AP Lang

Well I have both and well I am doing better in APUSH then in Lang, I’d say that AP Lang because APUSH is a nightmare of a class  So much unnecessary work. Lang is writing essay all class, analyzing released essays and class essays. It’s just a lot of papers but it’s simpler then APUSH workload wise

Take both. AP Lang is a pretty easy class with not that much work. APUSH does have a lot of work but you do learn a lot.

Both if you think you can handle it. It seems you are good in both subjects so no problem there. If it is really one or the other then take Lang, because it should benefit the most as far as college credit goes, assuming you take and do well on the exam. But APUSH is a lot of fun in my opinion

What classes are offered if you didn’t take either AP? Are they honors classes or regular? You could take honors in one and AP in the other, if both interest you about the same. Also look ahead and see the path for the following year and AP’s. If you like English, it would be good to have an AP English the following year then too. It’s not mandatory but does shows an interest in a specific area.

English 11h and American History honors, classes are really not too shabby but I want a taste of AP before I take multiple senior year.

What about doing AP Lit senior year

Also, I heard that at some school like RPI, that AP credit for Lang and lit only count as elective course credit…

If you think you can get a B or higher in an AP course, take it.
For schools like RPI, the expectation would be 2-3 AP’s jr year, 2-3 senior year, including sciences (calculus, physics 1, CS at a minimum).
If you only take one, take AP English language because it’ll apply to every single class you’ll take in HS and college (because reading, writing, synthesizing at a high level will be needed in every class).

@MYOS1634 What is your definition of a B? I assume you mean less than a 90. Well, I think if I studied over the summer for both AP classes, I would be at an advantage. Most people on this thread are saying that I should take AP Lang, so I guess I’ll apply for that class. Thank you very much.

it’s better to get 84-90 in an AP class than 90+ in a regular class - but if you’re getting a C (below 80) you’re not learning enough and you lose both the benefit of the content and of the admission plus.

Take both. AP Lang does not look that hard. It is just a glorified composition course. I assume that by the time you are a junior you can write a strong essay?
