hi, i've got a 4 on AP human geog and a lot of my classmates who want to apply ivies are also wondering whether they should cancel/withhold their 4s on AP exams~

Does a score of 4 affect our chances of admission? ( as compared to a bunch of those who got numerous 5s~)

Yale accepts the scores of 4 and 5 in terms of class advancement.
Also, listen to reapthenightmare. The AP scores are mainly for the classes you take at the college, not necessarily for judging whether you get in or not (to a certain extent. They still are important). Taking AP classes and challenging yourself, however, is definitely acknowledged by adcoms.

You don’t have to send official scores for admissions purposes, but the Yale supplement specifically asks you to self-report AP scores. That means that the scores play at least some role at the admissions table.

Obviously, we don’t know exactly how important they are in terms of admissions. But I’ve heard that they can use it to judge the difficulty of that particular class at your school. Like if you got an A in Human Geography but a 2 on the AP exam. That might give the signal to the admissions officers that the AP HumGeo class at your school isn’t that difficult. But otherwise, like Demiitasse mentioned, just taking the AP class and exam shows that you at least attempted to challenge yourself and that is definitely in your favor.

^^Correct. AP scores give colleges a standardized measure of your accomplishments in the AP classroom. But they do something else. They tell colleges something about the rigor of the instruction at your high school. Even though AP courses are standardized, there are variations in quality from high school to high school and teacher to teacher.

Most importantly, Yale specifically asks you to report. If you don’t report, you will have failed to follow the instructions on the Yale app, and you will also telegraph the message that you did poorly on an AP exam. Remember, the course will appear on your transcript, regardless whether you report your score. And a 4 is not a poor score!

It won’t significantly hurt you. 3 means you “qualify,” in general according to the AP guidelines, Yale just happens to accept 4s and 5s for class placement ONCE YOU’RE ADMITTED. 3’s are okay. Just not as good as 4s and 5s, that’s all.
