hey~Where is everyone getting their bikes?
One of my friends says that bikes from markets like walmart and costco are flimsy as hell and break really easily, but another friend says that they are fine and that it’s not worth spending 300+ dollars on a bike.
So what does everyone think?

If you’re just hopping around campus, I’d imagine a cheapo special would probably serve your purposes just fine. As a plus, if it gets stolen/broken you’re not really out very much. After seeing the bike racks on campus and how full up they get, I’m not sure I’d put an expensive bike in one of those racks anyways. :)

If your plan is more to use it to also cruise around the countryside for exercise, then you might want to invest in a more durable model.

indeed do not end up like me freshman year: 2 weeks into school and 1 $600 road bike short of what I came up to Davis with…

Everyone says if you bring an expensive bike, it WILL get stolen.

Dunno, seems like it’s better to spend your money on some good locks (and a fender for rainy days).

okay thanks for the replies. I’ll get a cheapo bike from costco =)
What a relief. I really didn’t want to splurge on a bike.

Keep in mind post #3… I got a slightly more expensive bike because I wanted it to last rather than having to buy a Walmart bike every time it broke ;)

i heard that we shouldnt get that much of an expensive bike ($300) but not a cheap bike either. i saw a site that was selling some good bikes for around $150. actually i jus found this post on the facebook davis group so im gonna copy paste it.

from my suggestion as my first year experience in Davis.

buy a cruiser bike instead of mountain bikes
cruiser bikes may be a little bit more expensive but it will really save you a tons of work and you wont go to class all sweaty.

don’t buy cheap bikes. Cheaps bikes in Davis means a hard freshmen year.
Although some people may say “buy a cheap bike so it won’t get stolen.” but if you have a good lock and you know where you park, this shouldn’t be a problem at all. Besides, you may be living somewhere close to campus on your second year and prob don’t need a car too, why not invest? :)

Although I hate to say this but Bike barn has pretty good bikes except their employees need to work on their attitudes and the prices of each bike and all other things should be lowered too… it is towards the expensive side.

As many, MANY, of you guys know, Davis is an University with the most amount of bikes. Bike accidents happen, and don’t expect it will not happen to you even if you think you are a good biker; others will run into you.

Target bikes = need a tons of work. Target is one of the companies / stores that sells the cheapest bikes in Davis however, you might need to get some more gears or fix its gears often ( friend of mine got a bike from Target… yes the purple and pink one, and now she just threw it away because the breaks broke and some other things went wrong. If you don’t want to bike for the rest of your college life, Target bike may be good to choose since it’s just cheap.

there is also a bike auction that occurs in davis. check daviswiki. i dont remember when they happen but i think there is one in the fall…or you can always check out the bike barn on campus (near the silo) in the 100-200 range.

Im confused as of what to do.
I have a mediocre bike that I bought last year for about $400 and I am afraid of getting it stolen. Should I just not worry about bring it to Davis? or should I spend another $150 or so buying another cheap bike? (I tried looking around craigslist for bikes, but I’m not sure how reliable those bikes are and they probably need fixing -_-)

Just make sure you get a U-Lock and a cable just to be extra safe

The reasons why most people get their bikes stolen in Davis is because
- They leave their bikes unlocked or locked improperly.
- They buy those flimsy cables that look like they can be cut with scissors.
