i know how stale the party scene can get and the fact that their are a lot of counter strike nerds, but how bout intramurals? do alot of ppl get involved and are they competitive/fun?

cuz i think i will enjoy the beach scenerey and i dont mind the lack of parties but i wanna get involved in something on campus that hopefully alot of others are involved in.

I was at the library today, and scanned through the Fisk Guide to Colleges and under UCSD, I read something along the lines of, "You are not a true UCSD student, if you don't join a sport/intramural."

Horribly requoted but hopefully you get the idea.

ok thanks alot...i really dont mind the lack of parties but as long as there are ppl involved in activities then i might be able to tolerate 4 yrs at ucsd for the education

IN terms of watching sports and supporting your school...UCSD really is awful. There is no such thing as Triton Pride...haha. UCSD seems content to be stuck in DII, a school of 30,000 playing tiny schools with names like CSU Bakersfield. At least WHEN Davis was DII, we rocked in all our sports and have established a winning tradition...Currently our football team has had a winning season 33 years in a row. (longest streak in the country) There is little sense of Triton tradition at UCSD. I'm sure there is intramurals at UCSD and my best friend joined the Rugby team at UCSD as means to have something to do. But, Davis is by far the King of Intramurals...established 1933...we have over 15,000 students partipating. Just today sign ups for 24 hour texas hold em tournament, hard core..finals will be played in the Pavillion and stuff. Massive amounts of cash go into our IM programs at Davis...it's insane and I LOVE IT. You win an IM at Davis...forever will your picture be enshrined on the WALL OF FAME...a pretty sweet wall in the ARC full of past champions.
-To note...For those of you waiting for Cal...they seriously have a "Slam Ball court" for IMs...basketball with trampolines...that's sweet

If you seek intramurals - you will find it. Basic activities exist at all universities. Is this a campus intensely involved with sports? - no. But once again the options are there for you.

I can confirm the previous posters thoughts. There is no football team and absolutely no passion for the university athletic teams that do exist.

PLEASE Don't make you decision assuming you will just "tolerate 4 yrs". If you already having the inclining you will be disconcerted by UCSD life then think broadly about your options. Sure if you go to a lower UC the slightly less selective class will make for a less rigorous education in that moderate proportion -- but does that matter?

If you're into sports, here's a little trivia

Berkeley? Golden Bears.
UCLA? Bruins
Davis? Aggies
Irvine? Ant.....eaters
San Diego? ?
Honestly, that was what my first impression was. UCLA and Berkeley have made it to the bigtime, with constant appearances in newspapers and sportscenter. Davis is definetely on the rise, with the transition to D1. We are passionate about our sports teams here, partly because there isn't much better to do and partly because we just plain love sports and competition in general. We even road-tripped down to SoCal to support our basketball team against Irvine and Long Beach.

If you're into sports and didn't get into Berkeley or UCLA, Davis is definetely the place for you. For one, we Aggies are the only other UC to have a football team. As GoAgs so well articulated, the IM world is quite an experience..as a freshmen we have teams comprised of members on our floor. It's a great feeling to win, but an even more euphoric feeling to win with your friends.

Here's an IM list for Davis by season if you're curious:
Fall-Flag Football, Outdoor Soccer, Volleyball, 3v3 basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, Singles Tennis
Winter-Indoor soccer, Ping-Pong, Racquetball, 5v5 Basketball (Inside the state-of-the-art ARC)
Spring-Outdoor soccer again, Softball, Inner tube water polo, Doubles tennis, Ultimate Frisbee again, Flag football, and Grass Volleyball

Quite a handful..IM sports are a great way to meet new friends and build new rivalries.

yea i was definitely leaning toward davis lifestyle but the beach scenery and education at ucsd is excellent....if only davis atmosphere moved to ucsd campus then i would be happy..haha

btw how are dorms at UCD? are their best and worst or all the same?

i got accepted to Sixth at UCSD and i cant do much worse than that....

CAchild, someone posted a message about the various college dorms... in some thread.

eep. i'm sorry i can't exactly pinpoint which thread, but omg, it helped a lot. just go search for 'UCSD colleges dorms' or something along those lines in the Search option.

i hope you find it! :) i just wanted to let you know that information about UCSD dorms in each of its colleges is here. somewhere.

I played intramural tennis while at UCSD. Its really fun and as a big tennis fan from norcal, its heaven cause the weather is always nice. You can play outdoors at nite most nites.

hurricaneh: i believe intramural is where you compete in sports against other kids in your own school. this differs from NCAA sports where you compete against other college competitively. intramural is for fun, a great way to meet people, and a good way to workout without stress.
