Hey,

I own a bike, a skateboard, and a longboard, but I was wondering which one would be best. I would think it is either the bike or the longboard just because skateboards aren’t the best for transportation. However, I don’t know how viable the longboard is on Brown’s campus. I mean, I visited during the summer, so there weren’t many students around campus, so I couldn’t get a feel for what is really used on campus. The campus is pretty hilly, but that’s not really problem because that is what longboards are made for. I guess my question really is, do people use longboards on campus at Brown? And even if no, do you think I could use one (i.e. is there any policy against longboards)?

Thanks <3

I just want to commend you for asking an original question here, instead of the usual “Brown vs. xxx college,” or “what makes Brown different.”

People have bikes. I had to look up what a longboard is (can you tell I’m old?), and I have no idea whether students use either them or skateboards (I’m an alum). The campus really isn’t that hilly – there’s a steep hill to go downtown, but to get from dorms to classes to dining halls is mostly level. As a freshman, you don’t need anything but your two feet to get around – nothing is that far. Just guessing here, but upperclassmen and grad students who live off campus probably use bikes the most.

Hopefully a more current student can tell you what students use.

My daughter got a bike pretty early on. She used to use it for going from one end of campus to another, going to the store, neighborhoods, she worked up to the point she could bike up the hill. And she used to do a ride to Newport either one way or r/t pretty often.

The issue is that the sidewalks are often brick, and there are potholes. I can imagine a longboard being a very bumpy ride. I’ve seen students using them, but generally only in specific areas. I would suggest bringing it, but you may not use it quite as much on a day-to-day basis.

Bikes are useful too - I’ve had mine the past few years and use it quite a bit, especially now that I’m off-campus. It’s a nice way to get around, and it makes it easier to do errands if you need to.

Thanks so much guys! I think I will just bring my skateboard and longboard along but walk for the most part ^~^

The skate scene in providence is huge, that much I know. Try checking out Civil skate shop for some advice

Aaaah that’s actually amazing to hear I was worried it would be dead like it is here where I live and I was worried that I would have to give it up/skate alone but you just made my day Brown honestly sounds like the best
