Are MIS/ISOM really that worthless of degrees?

Hi,

Although I'm primarily interested in finance, I was thinking about getting a double in one of these fields becuase I'm doing some work at a regional tech company for the summer, and I think the IT industry is pretty cool, plus, it is supposed to be an emerging field. The thing is, a lot of people say that those degrees are worthless because a CS person is better, so I was wondering if it would just be a waste of my time to couple finance or accounting with one of these?

Also, if anyone has worked in the IT field, would doing a double in finance and ISOM (my school's equivalent of MIS) open up good job opportunities? I know my username suggests otherwise, but I'm not looking at investment banking (I'm mostly looking for corporate finance or commercial banking careers and maybe real estate), so could this be a good thing to double in?

It is a fine major, but it isn’t for you. You should be focussing your efforts on becoming very good at finance. Being involved in finance clubs, funds, and real estate related groups (such as ULI) would be ideal.

^Agreed. I think the best major to pair and MIS degree with would be accounting, as Accounting Systems takes a lot from MIS. However, Finance really does not.

I’m considering to double major in MIS & Informatics, as the University of Washington offers both. I have seen a lot of member mentioning MIS & Accounting double major. So which one is better ? (I’m not into auditing after all)

An MIS major would likely look much more attractive to banks then a typical finance major because of simple supply/demand. There are so many people majoring in finance that you have a greater possibility of getting lost in the herd. An MIS degree would at least give you some solid hard skills that can be transferred throughout multiple industries. Finance is going to really narrow your options to mainly sales or analyzing financial statements.
