I’m going to be applying to colleges mostly in Long Island and NYC
Adelphi University
Pace University
St John University
Nyack College
SUNY Old Westbury
SUNY Farmingdale
SUNY Stony Brook
Nassau Community College
CUNY York
CUNY hunter
My GPA is a 3.6 on 4.0 scale
But my sat is a 1060 which I have struggled with
To me it’s obvious that stony brook is out of my reach though my mom keeps on insisting to apply. Are these choices good overall then or any other advice?
It is difficult to answer this question without knowing why you selected these–what your intended academic interests and major ? -some of these colleges you listed are strong in some academic areas and weaker in others. Also cost is a factor. Will you qualify for need based aid–what is your family’s expected contribution? Did you fill out the FAFSA yet? Are you planning to live at home or commute? Some of these colleges are private and upwards of $40K per year if you room and board whereas the SUNY and CUNY schools are less expensive. Are you a junior or senior? 1060 is low–can you take the test again in December? And lastly there is fit–have you visited any of these colleges and if so, how did you feel at each.
Are these schools all affordable? Do they have what you want in a college?
You may want to look at Hofstra – they are test optional so you don’t have to submit your SAT scores.
What about Queens College?
And it is fine to put an application into Stony Brook as long as you understand it is a reach.
I personally believe that CUNY and SUNY schools are incredible bargains, as long as your program and major are offered. I am a CUNY grad and my H attended a CUNY (York, which is on your list) and then a SUNY (Stony Brook). All of my kids attended either CUNY or SUNY schools. Both of us attended law school after college.
Queens College may be doable for you and it has dorms. St. John’s, which is not a better school, is about 5 times as expensive and isn’t, IMHO, worth it except for a handful of programs (actuary, pharmacy) and the law school, which although it’s not T-14, manages to get its graduates employment locally. I feel the same way about Hofstra, unless you have the stats for one of their generous scholarships, which you don’t seem to have (don’t feel insulted, I told my own kids the same thing).
My S17 got into Adelphi and Post (3.4 GPA, 27 ACT, portfolio review for his major). He got into both, but is now at an upstate SUNY. Although he got merit money from both private schools, he would have had to live at home to avoid loans. At a SUNY, I can put him through with no debt. That may be a consideration for your parents, if not for you.
SUNY Old Westbury is not a good school. Farmingdale is better but is more of a science/tech school so it depends on what you want to study.
Pace is just way too expensive and a hassle of a commute from LI. My son considered it but we couldn’t afford to have him dorm, so he didn’t apply. Hunter is also a commute into the City. Both schools can cost close to $400/month to commute via LIRR and subway. I am unfamiliar with Nyack College.
If you can indicate what you are interested in studying, maybe we can help you some more.
Yes I have, though I haven’t got any reply yet since it was from around this week. I will be commuting when going to college and staying home actually. So I’m not planning to dorm so that should help with some expenses. With my family the contribution might be a bit more since the salary is a bit high. I’m a senior, and my mom won’t let me retake the SAT at this point
I haven’t visited any of these colleges yet but I’m going to in a later date!
Yeah I was looking into Queens college too, but I wasn’t sure my scores would be a good enough.
For family doesn’t really want me dorming. Looks like Pace may not be a great choice then. I was also skeptical with Old Westbury
Do you know if LIU is good? Because my mom talked about how at least for the nursing program there is not the best the way the classes are set up
I’m still overall undecided with confidence in a major but for now I’m considering Nursing which my mom has done, Physical therapy, and accounting
What’s the deal with SUNY Old Westbury ?.I can’t seem to find any info on it, my son was accepted there, and we’re trying to figure out if he should go, or go to Nassau and then transfer to a better 4 year college. What is ‘wrong’ with it so to speak
Old Westbury is a beautiful campus but the academics don’t seem to be so great. If your S is willing to stay at home, I’d save the money, go to Nassau and then transfer.
If you are considering nursing and want to commute, go to Nassau Community College. Its nursing program is accepting applicants until March 23. You can get an AAS and then transfer to another program. You can then transfer to SUNY Farmingdale or Empire State or Delhi on programs with NCC that will get you in if you meet the criterion.
Adelphi is better than LIU but both are a lot more expensive than NCC. We toured both with S17. Although nursing is not his field, we saw the new area at Adephi and it was very nicely done but I can’t say if it’s worth 10 times as much as NCC.
