What is your current unweighted GPA, current weighted GPA, class rank/class number, and test scores (SAT or ACT)? What are you interested in studying in college? Do you have any geographical preferences? Budget restrictions? What state are you a resident of?

UW (factoring in senior sem)- 3.71
W (factoring in senior sem)- 3.89
SAT- 1450/1600
Last time I checked I was top 10%
I’m not 100% sure what I wanna major in but I don’t want to major in anything heavy with math or science.

Your GPA at the end of junior year is more relevant as that is what you know for certain and for some of your applications, your fall semester senior grades may not be available when you apply.

What is your budget? Will you be eligible for need-based aid? What is your home state? Do you prefer large/small, urban/suburban/small town? Sports scene? Greek life? You haven’t provided enough information for people to help you.

Uw: 3.67
W: 3.875
I’ve been in drama club since 6th grade (acting) and I’ve been in chorus for as long as I can remember (it’s not a club tho)
approx 230 service learning hours (idk how I got half of those hours but this summer i went overseas to volunteer in a 3rd world country and I’m spending a 6 day pd at a camp to counsel performing arts)
Worked over 9th/10th grade summer
9th grade summer I went to a partially selective performing arts camp for acting at a university for 2 weeks
11th grade summer on top of volunteering I’m going to a week long seminar called girls state about the US Govt
I don’t prefer Greek life
I prefer anything but a rural small town school
Yes I’m applying for financial (need based) aid and I will be eligible
I am all African-American
My mother said she only has enough money to buy me toiletries every month and my dad (with agreements as they stand) doesn’t have to help mom out with child support as soon as I’m 18. (I would really prefer I keep extremely personal info out of this like how much my mom makes & what state I live in)

Try using the supermatch function on the left (under find a college).

Get your hands on a good college guide book and start reading (ex. Fiske, Princeton Review). Focus on schools that would match your academic stats.

Run net price calculator for schools that seem to be fits. If you are need merit aid pay particular attention to schools where you are in the top 25% or so of the stats.

So it sounds like your EFC (expected family contribution) will be low. Sit down with your mother and fill out the FAFSA to see what that number is. That should be your first step.

The EFC is a minimum of what your family is expected to pay. It is not a guaranteed amount.

The reason I asked about your state of residence is not to invade your privacy but to see if there are good public universities in your state that are generous with financial aid. You can do that research yourself. It sounds like you might need to investigate at least one option that is within commuting distance of your home because room, board and books can easily cost 10-15K per year. The maximum student loan you can take out for your Freshman year is $5500 and it goes up gradually until your senior year. Combine that with work study and summer employment and your personal annual budget for college will be about 8K, assuming your parents can’t contribute anything. That might mean community college or commuting from home to a four-year college if financial aid does not come through.

There are consortia among public colleges and universities that have reciprocal agreements that provide reduced tuition for out of state students. One example is the WUE program (Western Undergraduate Exchange). You can google to see if your home state participates in such an agreement.

Here are some places that offer scholarships for full tuition or full ride for merit for certain stats. You qualify for some options listed here, including HBCUs if you are interested in that category (Howard, Tuskeegee, etc) However, be advised that the SAT minimums might change based on the new SAT (post March 2016) format.

Check out the book or website called Colleges that Change Lives (ctcl.org) for ideas for schools where you may fall in the upper 25-50% of applicants and therefore might be eligible for scholarships.

You also might be eligible to participate in Questbridge:

I realize you want to keep personal info out of this but it’s important. Your mother may ONLY be able to afford toiletries but if her income is high you may not be able to get good aid at schools that meet need. BTW, they take into account your father’s income regardless of whether he is willing to pay. Just the way it is. Then you need to look at Merit Aid options as show in the links from @mamaedefamilia

Ask your mom to help you run the Net Price Calculator at the website of a couple of the public universities in your home state, and at a couple other places that friends and family members have attended. This will give you some ball park estimates for what it is likely that your family will be expected to pay.
