Are non-academic electives excluded from GPA?

Like I got a D on a Band Final Test, But i hear it won't be in my GPA just like gym.

It depends. Which schools are you applying for? I know UCs use band/orchestra.

Yes they are excluded.

UCs have a Visual and performing Arts requirement so that is different.

Yes, many schools exclude them. Many colleges recalculate gpas based on their own standards which may include eliminating nonacademic classes such as arts, health, drivers ed, phys ed classes. Some colleges also add extra weight to classes like AP and IB courses. Some colleges eliminate extra weight that high schools may have added to AP and IB courses.

Well the thing is a I really like music as a hobby and EC, but the band teacher doesn't give out As so it could be a problem for my GPA and Rank.

In other words, I like band, but don't want it to hurt me.

Well if it is an actual academic course that shows up on your transcript it will most likely be reflected in your GPA unless it's graded as a Pass/No Pass (but you indicated that you recieved a letter grade). But it may not be included in your Academic GPA and just your Total GPA, also if this is a 9th Grade course, most UCs don't even factor in freshman year into your GPA. I would suggest either taking the next level Band course with a different teacher to validate the first course or to take another Visual/Performing Arts course. The school will look at the course with the highest grade when looking at your A-G requirments and may validate the older course in your GPA. Talk with a counselor about this.

But Gyms is a graded class as well....
