Are transfer students treated as equals?

As a new transfer student, I am curious as to how the UCLA community embraces transfer students? is there any noticeable difference between transfer students and four-year students academically (GPAs) and socially?
Are they pretty much in the same boat when it comes to job prospects? If by any chance, you are a four-year student, how do you view transfer students and what is your experience with them? any advice on how to make a smooth transition? appreciate it!

I don't think it makes a big difference. Just dive in there and do as much as you can, because you've got limited time. I was a transfer and was generally accepted.

I'm a transfer and I've never had any issues with it. Everyone I've met has been extremely welcoming. I've observed one or two people in classes who've made anti-transfer statements, but this is very very rare and not indicative of the majority of students.

Transfer students tend to have higher retention and graduation rates. There aren't any differences academically, from what I've seen. All of my transfer friends have done quite well.

Socially, it is more difficult to be a transfer. You have to be very proactive about being active on campus and meeting people. If you're in the dorms this will be considerably easier though.

Job prospects shouldn't be a problem either, but I suppose it depends on the field you're going into. My employer has no issue with my being a transfer and thinks that it shows initiative that I got into a selecive program at UCLA from a CCC.

haha i'm a 4 year student, and no offense to the transfers or to yourself, but the some of the transfers i've encountered are just pure dumb. i really do not understand how they got in here, but that's just my opinion on a few individuals.

LOL.

Well, I've met lots of dumb four year students too.

To say it's limited to transfers shows a degree of naivite about just how many stupid people go to our school.

But zheng, that ^^^ could be an example of the kinds of anti-transfer sentiments I was talking about. People think that someone is dumb because they are a transfer, not because they're just plain dumb. As if there aren't a ton of people on campus who should've had their admission re-evaluated, transfers and four years alike.

zheng, did you start the same thread in the myucla forums?

Funnyman, you have facebook mail.

allie, thanks!!

I didn't say it as an anti-transfer student statement. I don't immediately make the judgment that transfer students are dumb, it just happens that the one's that I have met, are dumb, like academically, really. haha.

I didn't mean that yours specifically was, just that with some variations it could be an example of what I was talking about.

And really. ALL of the transfers you've met have been dumb? How sad.

You know what they say about transfer students...

Always such a hater Flopsy.

:)

Flopsy is all knowing... so what do they say?

I'm a transfer and I've hung around campus a lot... there are a lot of dumb people at UCLA period guys. Transfer or not, it all depends on your perspective. As a transfer myself, I know a lot of dumb, cheating, shifty transfer students that got into UCLA as well as a bunch of dumb four-year kids whose high school records were inflated. It is easier to get into UCLA as a transfer academically, but you gotta realize, a lot of us have other life difficulties that we overcame to be apart of this. Then again, a lot of us are just stupid, flunked in high school, and found an easy ride through community college.

I am a new immigrant. Do I fit in a different category? I took the CC route because this is the only option for me. To be honest, SAT is a joke. The college entrance exam in my country is a zillion times harder than SAT. An average student from my country could easily ace SAT provided that the student's English is decent. Plus, I think new immigrants constitute the vast majority of the transfer population.

What I'm really concerned about is that transfers are not equally prepared to do the the upper-division coursework. After all, the competition at CC is much easier to cope with. For those who argue that transfers and freshmen admits are roughly on the same level, my question would be what is the value of a UCLA education then??

Well, first of all cc's are only two year schools. You obviously can't get a BS or BA from a cc.

Immigrants are not a vast majority of the transfer population. They're a small faction, and they're great. But they are definitely not the majority.
