And do most college kids have them in their dorm rooms? Also anything you've found useful to have in dorm rooms?

Yes. Not many colleges don't allow TVs in the dorm room, and most students do have a TV shared between them and their roommate. Check the sticky at the top of this page to see a good list of things to bring.

You won't have room for a big one; I think ours is 13", and we couldn't fit a bigger one. I have heard of many people taking a TV and then never having time to watch any TV with studying and hanging with friends and all. Take it in August and if you and your roomie never use it then take it home at Thanksgiving; then you'll have room for other stuff that you do use.

Ditto, check the "A-Z..." list stuck to the top of the college life forum.

Id bring at least a 20", 13"s are impossibly small.

20" is usually the optimal size

Damn. I thought I could get away without a TV but now I'm addicted to Boston Legal. Oh well, I'll just buy both seasons on dvd. Costs less than a TV and my laptop screen is superb.

haha... TV use also varies by person... I have some friends who are always watching DVDs, as does my roommate, but I personally have never watched TV in my room (used it like once to play Nintendo with friends when they were over). Unless you really think you're going to have time for TV, I probably wouldn't even bother bringing one -- there's always something to do with friends as well as studying, etc. (trust me, you'll find PLENTY of other methods for procrastinating your studies and homework!)

It's definitely true that you probably won't have time to use the TV as much as you think you will.

Still, I use it frequently enough to justify 24", and some of my friends have even bigger ones.

My roomates don't turn off the TV EVER. If I ever want to do hw, I have to leave; I swear I'm out of my room more than if I were being sexiled.

They aren't allowed....

I know plenty of fraternities which prohibit TV for their pledges...most of the pledges end up saying it was the best thing for them at the time - they studied more and hung out with their pledge brothers more...

I remember when I roomates mother came and she was looking around the room, she went into a closet to see if there was another room or something. She throght a dorm was a duplex with all the amenities. Even though I live in one of the biggest rooms on campus.

willmingtonwave, are you serious?

and if so, where do you go to school?

from what i've seen, you're allowed to have anything in your dorm that won't potentially blow up and burn the place down...and all of those things can be snuck in.

I'm bringing a TV and a 360, you can't study all the time.

Yeah, because a waffle iron is gonna blow up and burn the whole dorm down....wow. Anyway yeah I wouldn't bring one. But I'm going to college in NYC.

I'll probably invest in a laptop with a tv tuner..more convenient and it's easy to record stuff and all that...

I bought this computer monitor that doubles up as a TV specifically for college.
