TV in room?!

My parents don't want me to bring a TV up to college. They are afraid it will make me anti-social since there are TVs in the common area? How many students bring TVs? My roomate said he didn't need one. But, I'm getting the feeling that nearly all bring TVs. Am I right?

Yes, most bring them, my roomate is bringing mine.

I didn't have a tv in my room and never had a problem...Very few people actually had time to watch tv. If I ever wanted to watch something and the common area tv was being used by a large group of people watching something else (ie on nights when the OC was on) I could usually find a friend that would let me watch in their room. Not having a tv in the room makes it much easier to study in quiet...

I'm not bringing a TV to college...I move in on saturday. I'll let you know how it goes.

My sister didn't have one her 1st year. She isn't the kind to sit down and watch tv much, and if their was something she wanted to watch she could just watch it in one of her friend's dorms. :p

My mom won't let me bring my TV either, but I really don't care that much. They have TVs in common rooms and it's more fun to watch shows with other people. I guess you need a TV if you are addicted to shows that nobody else watches. shrug I don't watch that much TV during the school year anyway.

I got myself a card that works with my laptop. The only thing that I really watch is the occasional hockey game, news, and the History Channel.

The only thing I'm going to miss is the Food Network <3

I decided not to bring a televison to college. It's been a week since I moved in, and it was probably the right decision. Aside from message boards such as this, I have no distractions for my schoolwork. When I want to take a break, I read. By the way, at home I watched a great deal of television.

im not bringing one (i leave for college next week). it'll just be too much of a distraction. at home im basically a couch potato, and i dont want to be one in college...for obvious reasons

My parents don't want me to bring a tv to college either. But my roommate is going to bring a tv and ps2 after a couple weeks if we feel we need one. I don't know how much time I will have to watch anyways, and I don't want it to be a distraction since I've been watching tons of tv at night the past couple of weeks. There are only a few shows that I love watching anyways (Scrubs, The Office, couple of shows on Discovery Health Channel) so I will probably watch those in the common area or a friend's dorm if we don't have a tv.

we always had a tv, but it was for movie watching.. not tv watching. i don't think anyone ever watched a tv show... in my entire four years there.. tv shows are just.. dumb?

I didn't bring a tv... I brought a tv tuner card for my desktop computer so save space. There are tv's in common areas... but sometimes you want to be in charge of what you're watching. My school had a movie channel which was pretty cool. It wasn't that much a distraction for me, I got in the habit of leaving it on & doing homework infront of the tv - it works well for me.

I'll positively bring one when I go in two years. I couldn't live without Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon >_>
Not to mention my game systems. Revolution'll be out by then. ^.^

Almost everyone in my dorm has them (we get free cable, that may have factored in it) and no one is really anti social. We party pretty hard.

TV = CRACK = DEATH...

ok a little exageration, but seriously, why bring a tv. i'm not, don't know about my roomate. here's how i see it...i won't have time too watch tv, it costs extra money, its more of a distraction than anything, there are tv's in the common room, i'm not going to watch movies alone or with just my roomate (it'll probably be in the common room with more people), and it's one less thing i have to bring and worry about getting stolen or broken.

i'm not bringing one for my own well being.

and if i decide i do want one, i'll bring it during thanksgiving or christmas break.

what's up with people thinking they won't have time to watch tv? If you watch tv a normal amount in high school, you will watch it a normal amount in college. If you're not much of a tv watcher, aside from being unusual, you can deal without having a tv in the dorms because you don't watch much anyway. But you're going to be bored to death at times, and someone's in the common area watching something you have no interest in, and you're going to want a tv of your own.

im not bringing a tv, but now i wonder how i will watch my desperate housewives and degrassi? eh..i'll just hijack someone else's while theyre studying

lots of people have tvs.

TV is a must so you can watch college football etc.

It would kinda depend on how much you watched it at home....if you're a junkie then having none at college could be a bit too cold turkey. Plus I doubt it's going to make you a recluse....can't imagine anyone blowing off a party because "I'm watching Dallas reruns".
