What size area rug do they need in the dorm? Do they share one rug or each person brings a smaller one to just put by his bed?

It’s really up to you. When you get your dorm assignments you can look up plans of the building and get an idea of what size the room is. My freshman year and his roommate bought a rug during orientation week that was probably 8’ x 10’ that they shared. The floors in the new buildings are linoleum tile and really do look less institutional with a little bit of carpet. BTW those plans are pretty bad - it actually turned out that my son’s room freshman year was bigger than we expected, while his room sophomore year was much smaller and with less usable floor space (because of ridiculously low ceilings) than his freshman year room.

Anyway, I’d suggestion your kid wait till he has a roommate assignment and then they can decide together what they’d like to do.

My S was in Houston his first year (Freshman dorm) and we bought him a 5 x 8 rug. It happened to fit perfectly. In this case a larger rug would have been too big.

Thanks! He’s in South in a corner room. I’m thinking corner room should be bigger then others. Just wishful thinking. So they can get rug during orientation week? Where? Do they take them shopping or they just wonder on their own? I just started thinking about all the stuff we need to bring with us and I don’t think we can fit into one car. What do people usually do, take multiple cars, rent vans, or buy on of those big storage things that go on top of your SUV? We have about 4 hours drive.

They take them on a shopping expedition to Target during orientation week. I think they arrive after it normally closes and the place only has college students shopping.

You know there are plans for South Hall right? Residential Life & Learning | AS&E Students; They don’t show the closets so the rooms are actually smaller than what is shown on the floor plans. I only know the fourth floor which is horrible. My son was in 493 which looks like it’s wider, but because of the ceiling height felt really cramped.

In our case we just fit the 5 x 8 rug into the car all rolled up & packaged. We got it at Home Depot for less than $100. It’s actually still in good enough shape to use again for this sophomore year coming up! :)

We live less than 2 hours away from the school and have an SUV. You may be surprised how much you can fit in the car once you begin packing. We decided if it couldn’t all fit then we would just put S’s brother on the roof for the drive! ;)

Seriously, buy a 5 x 8 rug which is manageable and put it on one side of the car when packing. You should have enough room for stuff, especially if it’s a guy.

For anyone else that’s looking for an area rug. I just got one in Bed Bath and Beyond 5x7 for $30. We will pick it by by Tufts. Don’t think you can beat that price.

THe ones at Bed Bath & Beyond tend to be perfect for most dorm rooms.
