Area Studies (warren GE)

Hi everyone,
I'm going to be a pre-Bioenginerring:Premedical major at Warren next fall (woohoo!).. a couple of questions:
Is Biology considered noncontiguous to my major (bioE: premed)?
I have taken 3 Chinese classes (total of 15 units) at local CC during my high school years, will that count towards Area Studies (foreign language and cultural)?

also... according to warren AP conversion, a 3/4/5 on Calculus AB exam will exempt me from Math 20A (same for 5 on AP chem exam - take place of chem 6A 6B 6C), but that also happens to be a course used to evaluate whether I will be admitted to my major or not. Do I need to retake that course at UCSD?

thank you!

1) Biology is considered contiguous.

2) The Chinese should count. Make sure the credit is transferrable (it likely is).

3) The AP calculus test should exempt you from the class.

^ thanks!

do you happen to know how we get to choose courses for Area Studies? Do we just randomly pick two in lower division and one in upper division? Or is there a certain set of requirements/structure?

nah i think it's like "at least" one upper division. so u could technically take 3 upper divs and fulfill your req. i believe.

also, does anyone know if we have to declare our area studies? my friend said we had to but i wasn't sure.

I have a question, does taking a minor mean you don't have to do both Programs of Concentration, or would I still have to take 1 POC?

@oneday: Most Area Studies are pre-defined to a certain set of classes within a department. The Warren Advisors and the Warren Handbook (you'll get it at orientation) can tell you all the information you should need. All Area Studies are listed; basically, you can't create your own, you must choose from the college's offerings.

@infamy: Yes, but it's as simple as telling your academic advisor "this is the area study I'm doing," and then she'll tell you the classes you must take, and then you take the classes, and you're done. You can change it, do whatever with it, but you must complete them both before graduation.

@MrSpam: The minor will only exempt you from a PofC or AS in that particular study area. For instance, I am a CS major (Science/Engineering), and I may declare a Theater minor (Humanities). This I still must complete an AS in Social Studies.

^ thank you.

If I want to take classes at my local community college during the summer to fulfill one of the lower division courses for Area Study (intro to western music), what are the steps that I need to go through? (I read somewhere in this thread that you need to petition....?)

You will need to send a transcript to UCSD. I believe you only need to petition if the community college is not part of the California-wide CC system (called ASSIST or something).

Also, you can practically take whatever you want for the area studies. Each area has one really broad category of classes. Humanities has a humanities area, where you can take practically any humanities class; social science has perspectives in social science, where you can take practically any social science class; and math/science has some broad one too, where you can also avoid taking any upper division classes.
