Arts in tuscaloosa

My son signed up for the arts in tuscaloosa class at bama bound but he is coming from out of state and will not have a car. Is this going to be a problem. He said he was thinking he might have to drop it. But, I remember some talk about this class on this forum so I thought I would ask how the class works.

Good question.

Hopefully someone who has taken the class can let us know if the class arranges rides for those who don’t have cars. I would imagine that’s what happens.

Only 3-4 events were held off campus, and none were more than 15 minutes from campus. (The Westervelt Warner Museum, around 15 minutes from campus, was the furthest.) Rides should be easy to find given the large volume of people going to each event.

^^^

So, all the sections go to the same events at the same time? If so, that would be a large number.

I guess if worst came to worst, a student could call a cab, but if all sections go, it should be easy to find a ride or, if necessary, give a heads up to the prof who might be able to help a student find a ride.

Do the students put themselves on any kind of email list?

so you think he will be fine taking this class even with no car? He just doesnt want to get in it and then have issues. I think he should email the prof and ask. What do you think?

^^^I think e-mailing the prof is a great idea. You need this kind of basic info to decide on the viability of taking the course.

I know you really shouldn’t do this, but for the Westervelt Warner Museum, there is a virtual tour that will give you all the information you would need for the course. I had some friends who took that class and used that for that museum. For what it’s worth, I visited the museum and thought it was beautiful.

I think emailing the prof is a good idea. Since more and more kids are coming from further away and don’t have cars on campus, the prof may want to have a more organized ride-sharing system for these activities.

same question bassett, DS has signed up for this and doesn’t have a car. Wondering if he should possibly drop the class. Any input would be very helpful!

This class is super popular and I think all sections go to the same things, so certainly many kids don’t have cars and manage to get to the events.

I wouldn’t just drop the class without emailing the prof first and asking. I’d ask how many events are off campus and if there any arrangements are made for those who don’t have cars…such as signing up for ride-sharing.

Guess he will have to ask the prof.
What concerns me is that it looks like the non-lecture part of the class is from 3:30-4:45 Tues., which doesn’t seem enough time to go to an event as a group, so I’m assuming the events are during non-class hours. Just wondering if there are possible sched. conflicts with the events and his night classes/labs etc. Nothing scheduled Thurs-Sun. nights though, so maybe I’m overthinking this.
At this point being in the home stretch with packing, finishing his job and some paid band gigs (yay  ), don’t see him contacting the prof. himself. Hoping to find the info here so I don’t have to be that emailing mom!

^^^

I would email the prof with both concerns…car-pools and schedule conflicts for events (other night classes and such) and see what the prof says. This class has been offered for years, so certainly these issues have been addressed.

BTW…I don’t know how thorough your child is when writing such an email, but if he’s not good at such things, ask if you can look the email over before sending to make sure all concerns are addressed.

Prof…Dr. Allen Jones
abjones@bama.ua.edu

Here is the response to my email asking if a car was necessary to complete the assignments for Arts in Tuscaloosa

“Dear Ms. Rodriguez,
Thank you for your inquiry. For the few events that take place off
campus, I invite students to let me know any transportation issues they
have, and we provide several options for getting them where they need to
be. Most often, as the semester progresses and the students get to know
each other, they generally carpool. Hunter is welcome to get in touch
with me with any other concerns.”

I got the same reply as far as transport, then this additional as I asked about how the scheduling worked.

…
As this is a course for 3 hours of credit and we meet only a little
over 2 hours per week in class, much of the course involves experiential
learning. No required event of a timely nature is restricted to one
certain day of the week. For example, attendance at the semester’s 4
theatre and 2 dance performances is required, but each play runs Monday
(sometimes Tuesday) through Sunday, and each dance performance from
Tuesday through Friday. The students determine dates and times to attend
all the various arts events according to their academic and work
schedules. Only classroom times are by the book.

Ah…good to know. :)
