I'm applying to Harvard EA with a pretty strong GPA/scores, great extracurriculars, and hopefully good essays. Though I'm not planning on majoring in art, photography is a huge part of my life. I have my own business; I take senior pictures, engagement pictures, etc. However, I've only won one award since my work is more personal than editorial.

Absolutely! No reason not to submit. Again, I’m not the best person to judge photography as it’s not my area of expertise. From my (admittedly amateur perspective), your samples are very well done. Not particularly modernist or experimental–largely with a realist bent. Still, there are some quite striking aspects. As most of your work is commercial, this is to be expected. Still, there are certainly lots of great professional photogs working primarily in portraits, and I think one or two of your pieces bring out a certain humanity in the subjects that I find quite touching.

On principle, photography supplements are every bit as valid as any other artistic discipline. Your art sup submission does not have to do with what you’re going to major in. I’d venture a guess that many successful applicants who submit art sups are not actually concentrating in art or music (despite Harvard’s reputation–not so great right now among some quarters–of churning out ibankers and lawyers, its list of artist alums is not exactly short).

Remember, Harvard’s is a holistic review process. This likely won’t make or break you. But it will add an additional dimension to your app and I think you should submit.
