Arts Supplement

Hey everyone!
So I'm applying to Yale RD and I wrote my supplement essay about filmmaking. However, I don't know if the films that I have produced merit sending as arts supplement (because I hear Yale is very critical about the submissions?). Filmmaking is also a decent part of my common app/activities portion. What should I do?

This really should be a FAQ.

I believe that the link below is the best answer.

As a producer, you cannot point to something on the screen and say “I did that!” It’s not like directing, acting or art direction. So, I think providing a link to films you have produced will not have much impact on whether you are accepted or denied. Therefore the essay should suffice.

@gibby So admissions officers won’t be skeptical that filmmaking is such a big part of my application yet I didn’t submit any work to show for it?

@darkandrasberry: Not in the least. My daughter, for example, applied to colleges with theater as her main extracurricular activity. Although she listed each play and musical separately on her EC list, she did NOT include a link to a video of her performances. I think it’s the same for you.

@gibby Thank you for advice. On sort of a sidenote, should the competitions that I won should also validate that my filmmaking talents aren’t completely fabricated?

Yes, the competitions should validate your talents, as well as any IMDB credit you may have received. And your recommendation writers and guidance counselor may bring up your involvement in filmmaking.

FWIW: Colleges trust that students are telling them the absolute truth on the Common App. There’s even a disclaimer to students about what happens if they have fibbed on their application and are found out after the fact. So they take your word for everything until proven otherwise.
