As an adult, do you like dressing up for a Halloween gathering?

Same here, @Hoggirl. Pretty sure the last time I dressed up Reagan was president. Zero interest.6

I like to dress up, but seldom have the wherewithal or a good reason to do so. Back in the day I made some large and interesting capes for my girls and sometimes have dressed a bit witchy for handing out candy. It was gratifying to see D today in a photo in front of the school where she teaches, wearing one of those capes as a rather stylish witch.

No to the dressing up, no to a Halloween gathering. Now that my kids are grown I turn out the porch light so I don’t have to open the door to trick or treaters. I’d leave candy out for them to help themselves but it would all probably be gone in minutes.

I love Halloween and love dressing up- last year we all dressed up just to watch movies at home and eat candy. The last minute pressure of a specific costume would probably stress me out though.

That sounds really mean to me. The people in your neighborhood that don’t like to dress up aren’t welcome at the neighborhood party? We have theme parties in my neighborhood too but it’s always clear that everyone is invited no matter how they dress. I do not like costumes and never dress up but love going and socializing. I’m glad I don’t live in your neighborhood.

I think if you reveal on this thread that you like to dress up and in fact ARE dressing up this season, you must share what your costume is!!!
(I’m all for Halloween and costumes - I just don’t want to be the one in one!! )
(also not a fan of gory Halloween…)

Not mean at all. I meant that more as a joke for this thread than for our actual party. We’ve had a couple of people come late from a another event and not be wearing a costume. Nobody cares. But generally everyone who attends wears a costume. Some people get more into it than others but we all have a lot of fun with it. We are all really good friends and it’s one of many fun events we have in our neighborhood every year.

Stopped going to Halloween parties decades ago once I realized how seriously adult New Yorkers take the holiday (hint: a fake nose or plastic mask won’t cut it in many cases.) I feel the same way about adult Christmas and birthday gifts past a certain age (unless they’re for a SO.)

I will say I feel way way way way way way WAYYYYY more stressed out about picking out an outfit to wear to a fancy occasion like a wedding than I do to dressing up for Halloween! I don’t get what’s to be stressed about? It’s just fun. Doesn’t have to be anything fancy or elaborate, just throw on a cape and a black shirt and you’re spooky! Get a Halloween themed face-mask with a jack-o-lantern or skeleton on it. It’s just easy and fun and you can make a costume out of stuff you already have laying around the house.

Now, dressing up for a wedding — yeesh. So much stress for me.

When our girls were younger, yes. It was part of creating some fun for them. It has been many years because it seems like a lot of effort. I think I am going to change that. I just dug out a costume to wear to work tomorrow. Life is meant to be fun!

Add me to the dislike column - any sort of dressing up. I’m also not a fan of Halloween at all anymore. I liked it when it was about young kids in costume getting candy. I’m not at all into the adult ghoulishness it’s become complete with multiple Horror movies, etc.

I have a Disney t-shirt with a witch on the front. That has been my outfit the past 25 years. When I went to a gym, they would ask us to dress up. So, all black or an orange top with black yoga pants.

A teacher In My son’s elementary school would wear her wedding dress every year.

I used to love dressing up when we lived in a neighborhood with lots of kids. I dressed up as a witch usually. I had a big witch hat that I attached a huge spider to with a black elastic string.
If timed right the spider would come down from my hat and scare them as they reached for candy. Tons of fun.

Only other costume I wore that I really liked was when I found a professionally sewn dance hall girl costume at a thrift shop. That was super fun to wear.

But now our neighborhood is devoid of little ones and I’ve turned into a curmudgeon. I wouldn’t mind dressing up if someone brought me a costume but I don’t really want to spend the time trying to piece one together anymore.

We have done some family costumes over the years and we go to Disney for their Halloween party- dressing up is part of the fun. Costumes we’ve done- The Scooby Gang- including our dog, Once Upon a Time- D1-Red D-2 Evil Queen, Me- Emma Swan, DH- Hook (he hated guyliner but looked awesome), The 4 seasons. The other costumes Dh and I did- Game of Thrones and Bob Ross and Happy Little Tree. My husband is just out numbered and has to go along #girlsdad.

With that, I don’t like parties that I have to dress for a theme. I kind of hated the kid’s spirit week at school. Always having to find something to fit the “theme”.

We did a family bit of Big Bang Theory about 7 years ago. I look a lot like Jim Parsons so with a handful of Sheldon t-shirts, 3/4th length solid color t-shirts and Khaki pants, it works fine. Wife went to second hand store for some frumpy clothes to be a convincing Amy (host at one of the parties (who was good friend of my wife) didn’t recognize her). Son (who actually is Sheldon on how he lives and thinks) went as Leonard (he looks more like Leonard but acts totally like Sheldon). Daughter found something very close to Penny’s Cheesecake Factory uniform and as the girl first in her class, went as the dizzy blond. I still wear a Sheldon t-shirt as a weak costume sometimes. Green lantern one passes as superhero for events calling for that.

Had to answer to “Spirit Week”. My D had a theme of “twin day” but she really didn’t have someone to do it with. She made a life-size doll her size, dressed it up, put yarn hair on it and dragged it off to school. Hilarious and yeah, she won a prize for it. Also ended up at art school.

I put on a costume for Purim, and that’s enough for me until the next year. Halloween is too soon for me to do it again.

Last Halloween party I went to where it was costume was 17 years ago. It was fun when we got there, but I didn’t like trying to figure out what to wear. I would also skip them now unless it was a party a very good friend would have. About 13 years ago or so, we were invited to a 70’s party. We went and didn’t dress up. We were the only ones and felt very awkward and like big party poopers. I’d never do that again.

I work for a medical clinic with over 15 locations. It was suggested that the clinic with the best costume would win a free lunch. My previous manager never was into dressing up, so we never participated before; out new manager was excited to have us dress. She bought t-shirts and painted them as baseball shirts, with a play on the clinic name. While I was happy to wear what was provided, we also downsized a few years ago,and there is nothing in this house that isn’t needed!

The funny thing about staff being so excited to win the free lunch, we have reps send lunches usually twice a week. Having a free lunch is nothing special, but some people are all about winning! After seeing some of the other clinic’s pictures, I don’t think we will win.

I have a few costumes here…but the one that gets the most wear is a Disney Store heavy fleece Eyeore costume I bought when my kids were little. I’ve worn it most Halloween’s when outdoors was happening. I have a cute 50’s outfit for indoor parties.
