Asian Food on Campus?

I know its quite silly to make one's college decisions based on the on-campus food of a college, but I'm going to do it anyways. I'm Asian and I'd love to be able to have something oriental to munch on. I hear there are some Thai and Chinese places off-campus, but does the school itself serve something asian? Also how's the asian food in the town?

Collis has delightful sushi that is not badly priced

Foco, Homeplate have occasionally have asian themed dishes, the quality is debatable

Any of the asian organizations (DAO, etc) are always making foods, for example free korean bbq ribs last year.

In town there is a small asian food store as well as Mai Thai (Thai), Orient, and Yamas (Korean). Yamas is relatively new and is extremely popular.

I believe Collis has pho as well?

I think I’ve also seen packaged, refrigerated Asian foods at the Courtyard Cafe (the Hop) and Foco.

EDIT: There’s also a place for Indian in town as well (Jewel of India); nobody has mentioned it yet.

@ashencro Yama’s is horrible. Since you are asian, if you ever taste the food there, you will be appalled. It’s only popular because there aren’t a lot of asian restaurants around Hanover. It doesn’t taste anything like korean/japanese food. There is one Thai restaurant called Mai Thai. It’s “buffet” consists of 6 dishes and is rarely replaced. There are two chinese restaurants about 15 mins off campus which are pretty bad as well.

I think Collis’ sushi is overpriced and the Orient uses too much salt and MSG. Yama’s and Jewel of India are quite delicious, but I’ve only eaten there a few times.

I had the buffet lunch there, and I thought it was surprisingly good. Of course, being out in the middle of a New England forest, I had low expectations going in.

I never said it was bad, i just said that there is not much variety. However, Mai Thai pales in comparison to thai restaurants in Cornell.

The Japanese Restaurant in West Lebanon is pretty good.

Yama’s is pretty good if you ask me. The Orient sucks but we’re hoping Yama’s will provide decent competition and get their butt moving. I love Jewel of India’s Sunday brunch buffet. There’s also India Queen, which hardly anybody ever goes to. Not a fan of Mai Thai, but I come from Southeast Asia and find the food at the buffet quite authentic, for what it’s worth.

On campus, most of the Asian food worth eating can be gotten cheap/free from the Asian student organizations. Collis has sushi once in a while, and the other DDS outlets sometimes sell packaged sushi too, but at really exorbitant prices (if you ask me; they’re at least two or three times the cost of equivalent food in, say, Boston). DDS occasionally serves Asian cuisine specials but I’m not a fan of them in general, though they’re not bad.

BTW your opinion of the food I think will vary depending on whether you are Asian, Asian-American, or not Asian at all. I’m Asian (as in grew up in Asia) and though I don’t find much of the food in the area authentic, I think it’s pretty good nonetheless – especially Yama’s. Most of the Asian-Americans I know love Yama’s and aren’t so big on The Orient. My white friends love The Orient for some reason. :-/

According to my credit card bill, my son loves Yama’s. But if Asian food is a priority, Hanover would be among the last places I’d head.

there is a new asian foods store across the street from collis!
also, there is mai thai and the orient? …something like that
ALSO, a new sushi place–yama-- recently opened

lots of good asian food

my favorite is the asian foods store

Yama’s isn’t that bad if you know what to order.

Orient is typical Chinese Take-out.

The Asian food served on campus is almost always horrible, including the sushi at Collis.
