im asian and do your parents get so hyped about scholarships, etc.. they dont want any loans and if there are loans they want me to pay for it, and also they really get critical and snap at me when i tell them not to worry, any other asians out there feeling stressed out from their parents?

same here :(
but I learned to cope with their obsession and started to make fun of them ;)

omg ^^ same here. But I don't see what's wrong with paying your own loans. Even if you don't have enough money now, you're going to work after school and pay it right back. What's wrong with that?

my parents agree to pay for half my tuition.

hahaha i'll try that, its good to noe there are ppl facing the same stress not that the stress is good but that i dont have to feel like im the only one

I dont know about that.

I think parents should pay for kid's education ( up to college).
If there having a cash problem, there always a loan for them (PLUS)

imo

I paid for my own college loans, and had no resentment about doing this. Those loans were for my education, which I directly benefited from. I don't understand why students expect parents to pay for their loans.

I've never heard of such a thing. Haha all the Asian parents I know have enough money to send their children to Ivys but a lot of the times the children just aren't smart enough to get admitted lol.

My parents are willing to pay for anywhere as long as I get into a good college.

My friends were really surprised when I told them that I paid for all of my (numerous) AP tests, SATs, SATIIs, college app fees, and other stuff. They expect parents to pay that, but I'm rather glad I got a head start on (somewhat) paying for myself.

My mom says she'll contribute to college, but what she means is like... $1000 or something. But that's okay, I like handling my own affairs and don't get too stressed out about it. We're Asian, but not filthy rich... most definitely not...

my mom is just stingy in general. she mentions once in a while that maybe i should just give up and go to a state school cause it will be "cheaper", and i just obediently nod and mentally curse her.

i'm not qualified to get a need-based scholarship and I don't really have anything "special" to get a merit-based scholarship. I'm trying to find maybe some kind of viola scholarship? I don't know, someone help me out?

And back to stingy asian parents- I was so sick of my mom making me feel like i had to depend on her for tuition that I had an ROTC app mailed to me and I filled it out, gave it to my GC, the whole shabang (my GC gave me the weirdest look and must have thought "what is this rebellious asian 17 year-old girl thinking?!"). and then i dropped it cause it requires you to be in the army for 8 years. eh, it was worth a try.

Well just redo your college list with all bottom 50 schools where you're sure to get a free ride. They'll probably write a check really fast!

Tell your parents not to be stingy with a matter as important as education. If they are unwilling to pay, just go to a state school and take out loans. If you work hard at state school then you can go to law school and sue your parents for pain and damages occuring when they flushed little jimmy the goldfish down the toilet when you were three. This should buy you a good portion of their Roth IRA and a first class ticket to hell. You can then pay back the loans, buy a fancy viola, and play your viola for Lucifer himself as you are whipped by the flames of evil and beg for mercy.

OR....you can write that you are African-American on your college applications and receive a large scholarship from the United Negro College Fund. If this fails you can always call Mike Jones

uh....thx??

hahahaha...or you can take suze's advice, but good luck getting a job...

my parents are giving me 2 savings accounts for my entire college education use. one is my college saving in canadian dollars and the other has a set amount of money that my mom set aside for my college education. anything beyond that they are not providing.

Hmm.. I don't think my parents are going to pay my fees so I'm probably signing up for military scholarships. About 2-3 weeks ago, I had a brief introduction on the military scholarship and it describes every scenario. It says that the military service will pay books, loans, & standards. Besides that, there is like a $3000 every month. It seems low, but if I graduate, I'd have to be on the military armed forces =(... The good thing is that I get $3000, my monthly pay, & bonuses for going on active duty.

I thought Asian parents are the ones who will go beg on the streets to see their sons/daughters go through a good college. Maybe you guys can ask your grandparents etc.

xcutioners, I dont believe you actually have to go to the front lines. You can work in engineering and stuff like that. OR you can look at the Navy. Dont know much about it but the Navy rarely gets shot at.

War of 1812 (Impressment of sailors), Spanish-American War(USS Maine), World War I (Lusitania), World War II(USS Ruben James + Pearl Harbor), Vietnam (Gulf of Tonkin Incident), War on Terrorism(USS Cole) all started because (or partly because) someone attacked our ships (or we thought they did anyway).

Lol I mean nowadays. If you compare the casulty rate in Iraq i dont believe there is many Navy personel.
