in response to yesnomaybeso7: perhaps the community in which you live really has no asian-haters. But seriously, as a Chinese person, I can honestly say that people in Connecticut have some diversity issues. Let me give you an example. One summer day I was sitting at the breakfast table reading a book, when all of a sudden these two boys on motorbikes zoom across the lawn and scream CH*NK at me while laughing their heinous heads off. I can tell you it was certainly not a happy experience.

But back to the issue at hand. I agree with the other people. Why do you have to conform to a certain stereotype, whether good or bad? And if you do happen to fall into a stereotypical Asian category, what's so bad about it?

I've never experienced overt racism, but I think there might be an undercurrent of unconscious prejudice in American society, or at least a basic ignorance about Asian-American culture. Like that whole perpetual foreigner thing. It seems like if a black African immigrates, everyone assumes that he was born here. Whereas if an Asian American's great-grandfather arrived for the gold rush, they still ask whether he came from China or Japan.

I've never really experience racism, and I'm mix Chinese and Mexican.
I live in the south too, and I don't always stay in the urban area...I go into the country and I still encounter little racism...Maybe I'm oblivious to it...

But if anyone calls me China (minus the 'a' and add a 'k') then I would probably say 'Sure am, F*** you!'
I don't see why you should get so upset over why someone called you something degrading. The Chinese Community has always accepted me, as well as the Mexican community...
Much of the stereotypes are true though, if being smart is one I don't see how that is shameful. I think its good we have many of these stereotypes, I absolutely hate Asian Gang bangers, Mexican ones too but I have just come to accept those.
I honestly wish I could go up to those asian Gangsters and smack them upside the head and say 'what the **** is wrong with you??? your ancestors cam to America for you to make a mess of your self??? so you could go to jail and feed your self the lie that you are representing and protecting 'your people' ' but they probably wouldn't listen.
I can't say much though, some of my cousins have come and made total messes of themselves moving from city to city...from LA to Chicago to Houston. I'm ashamed of these people who call themselves Asians, they are ruining our reputation...which everyone is trying to destroy anyways... but it won't go away...not anytime soon.

I don't even try to stop anyone anymore, its their life...I'll keep the Asian stereotype alive LOL, the Mexican one is already long ruined...I hear so much crap...

just ignore it. why bother trying to protect yourself from it?

You don’t have to group yourself into either category. Who you become does not depend on other Asian girls that surround you.
