So does it work against Asians to apply to ivies/top notch schools? 0.O

it certainly doesn't help- asians are not underrepresented minorties, in fact they are overrepresented at top schools.
therefore you will be compared to all the other asians with 2400s and 4.0s, so just like white christian girls asians sort of get shafted

Asians are considered as overrepresented minority... still a minority...

ahahaha.... not all asians have perfect numbers... and yes it hurts. but if you have 1500+/1600 SATs, and a decent GPA/class rank, you have a shot.

I don't think high SAT is going to help A LOT... they only accept 20% of students who score higher than 700 on either part of the SAT

Define "asian". There are certain asian groups that are more represented in colleges.

Wasn't there a big fuss recently about Asians being discriminated against in East Coast schools? Something in that expose on Ivy admissions. Asians supposedly rank lower in character scores than Caucasian so most head to the West Coast.

lol. asians NOT being considered as minorities for top schools is hardly news. i believe a study done a few years ago indicated that elite institutions require average asian SAT scores to be at least 50 points above that of caucasians and 100+ points above latinos.

I think it was more like 10-20 points higher than white people. Don't get too carried away with the self-pity train

yea asians not considered as URM is pretty homo

i wonder how many asians got into PLME Early decision this year...

uh huh, that's what YOU think. try checking the nov. 11 article from the Wall Street Journal titled, "Admissions Bar higher for Asians?"

I have read it, thanks, and it says for Asians compared to whites as a whole. You have to remember that recruited athletes at Ivies are usually white, as are legacies, which drives down the white SAT average. For "regular" applicants the gap probably isn't as wide. Many at CC have far too much of a "lets-blame-affirmative-action" complex

Th CC crowd tends to also not really understand affirmative action, Elpope, but I can't blame them, I can't say that I had much of a handle on it before being at the university and taking a course about universities.

FWIW, it's against the law to raise standards for one group versus another. Not to say that all admissions boards are following that to the T, but unless you're of Asian descent other than Korean, Chinese, Japanese, or Singaporean (is that the correct form?) it probably won't help at all. It doesn't hurt, just doesn't give a boost.

And honestly, if you're not an under-represented group, it shouldn't. If you did receive preference and were not under-represented, I'd point that out as the best example of a broken system.
