Ask away if you have any Qs guys.

Where’d you transfer to and for what major?

I transferred to UCLA, Philosophy major.

Great! I plan to transfer to UCLA as a philosophy major in fall 2014! Because I’m inclined to procrastinate, I started my UC application yesterday. :P

Would you mind chancing me, please?

Some facts about myself:

3.85 UC GPA.

Will be TAP certified soon.

3/4 pre-reqs have been completed. I’m taking a symbolic logic class this semester that I’ll get at least a B in. It’ll be the last class for the major.

My major GPA will be 3.5 if I get a B in the symbolic logic class. If I get an A in it, it’ll be 3.75 instead.

Sadly, I have no extracurriculars or work experience to speak of.

What are my chances, Philosoup?

@Cayton

Which College are you attending?

I had 3/4 done during this time of the year as well, and it was also Symbolic Logic that I was taking at the time.

Honestly with a 3.85 you’re guaranteed to get into UCLA, and every other UC. I got in with a 3.5 GPA and also there’s really no need to TAP but go ahead if you want to anyway.

UCLA doesn’t seem to really care about Extracurriculars or any other type of experience for transfers so don’t worry about that. Just write a decent personal statement and you should be set! I mean I know a couple of bums who got into UCLA Philosophy with 3.2s and stuff…and even Cal.

I go to Santa Monica College, the “Harvard University” of community colleges, lol.

I still intend to receive TAP certification. I want to increase my chances of admission by as much as possible. :P

Glad to hear that extracurriculars don’t matter much; that’s certainly consistent with what others have said about the UCLA admissions process. But I didn’t think you could get into UCLA or Cal with a 3.2 gpa in philosophy…wow.

Thank you very much, Philosoup! You’ve certainly mitigated my anxiety over this whole admissions thing. Do you mind if I ask you one more question? How is the philosophy program at UCLA?

I went to SMC as well. Are you taking symbolic logic with Kaufman by any chance?

Yeah go for TAP if you can.

The admission process can be really complex. One guy I know got rejected from UCLA with a 3.1 GPA in Philosophy, but got accepted to Berkeley.

I was pretty overwhelmed by the program here at UCLA. It’s definitely difficult compared to SMC philosophy. A paper that I would’ve received an A in at SMC resulted in a C at SMC, the first time I submitted my paper. So just be prepared. Also you can change your major after you get admitted so there’s other options.

Yeah, I’m taking it with Kaufman right now, we’re going over proofs and theorems. It makes my head hurt. :’(

How did you adjust to the UCLA philosophy program?

@Cayton.

Just keep doing the homework and go over the crap you guys go over and you should be okay.

I adjusted mainly by taking more time off for studying…reading the stuff etc. you should be fine. just focus on the present for now.

@Philosoup

I’ll be sure to do that. Thanks for the advice, man. I really appreciate it.

No problem. Feel free to ask me other stuff. Feel free to PM also.

How was the transition from the CCC to UC? Do you have any advice once we are enrolled to our respective school?

Shout out to the SMC Philosophy students!! I was thinking of taking Symbolic Logic next semester, any tips? I have heard it is one of the more difficult philosophy classes :/

@luckie1367 SMC for life!

Well, symbolic logic is a math-like philosophy class, but I’ve found it pretty easy…for the most part. Beware the logical proofs and theorems…

Most people in the class get A’s, though. It’s pretty much impossible to get anything less than a B of you’re trying to do well in the class.

In summary, it’s not ridiculously difficult(And I say this as someone is awful at math), but there are some parts of the subject that can be a little challenging. Don’t worry too much about it, though. :)

We’re on the quarter system so it was pretty hard to adjust to. We have to study for both our 3-4 midterms within week 5 or 6 so it gets hectic. Lots of all-nighters, something I’ve never done in CCC. Also the professors seem to talk A LOT at a fast rate. I had to bring my laptop to type my notes. If I can do it so can you. It’s not so bad.

Did u have a lot of EC?i dont have any im scared that will be held agsinst me especially for UCB
