When do you hear back from housing about room assignments?

Do you have any idea what kind of stats you need for one of the general scholarships?

How strict is the police around campus?

Are the bars around campus strict with kids with fake ID’s?

Can underage students get away with tailgating on gamedays?

Housing assignments go out late May/early June.

The FSU police are full police officers, not just campus security. They are armed, and can make arrests just like the Tallahassee police. The campus police department is like most other police departments, except if you are arrested and will be kept overnight, you are transferred to the TPD. They only have holding cells. They are not going to see the law be broken in front of them and not do anything about it. However, on gameday there seems to be some discretion. . If you are falling down drunk, if you are load or obnoxious, and you are of any age, they will not tolerate it. If you are walking around with an open container of alcohol, or drinking in public, plan to have an ID. But if you preparty somewhere before the game, and do not walk around on campus with alcohol, it will not be a big problem. There is no alcohol sold on campus even at the stadium on gameday. That is not to say there are no kegs… The frats set up kegs, and there are other groups tailgating. But if you are underage you will preparty before you get there.

The bars are strict in the sense they always check ID, and some swipe ID’s as well. That is not to say there is not borrowing going on. In Florida, when you turn 21 and go to get a new license, you don’t turn in the old one. That surprised me. You can’t swipe it and have it show it is active, but it can be used at a bar that does not swipe. So if you look like a friend, and they turn 21…

do you find out what books you need right after you sign up for your classes?

Yes. Actually, if you look on the course lookup now, you can click on the section number for any class and then you can see what book you would need. Once you have a schedule, there is a link that will take you directly to the bookstore with info on books and prices. The ICDN numbers are listed so that you can look on half.com and amazon and others. But sometimes there are bundles that make it a little harder to figure out exactly what you need using another bookstore. Bills Bookstore has a search function and makes it easy to find what you need for each class and section, and they do the bundles.

Some students wait until the first day of class to see if they really NEED the books. But by then you have to pay the full bookstore price. There are used books for some sections, and some books for popular classes you can also rent.

Good job, current FSU students! You make life for us Florida State alumni easy. :)

About how many days/weeks prior to the start of the semester do you move into your dorms? For example, say I was starting classes in Fall 2010 and classes start August…

@Tasian522
The [Fall 2010 Calender](<a href=“FSU Registrar | Error 404 page not found”>FSU Registrar | Error 404 page not found) is up.
Looks like residence halls open up Aug 18th at 9am this year. Classes start Aug 23rd.

oh wow thank you! I had no idea the calendar was up

great! I want to rush and i wasnt sure where i would stay

I wasn’t invited to the honors program when I was admitted. I talked to the admissions office & they told me that I could apply to get into the program. Do you think I’ll be able to get in? I am in the top 7% of my class (ranked 32/442), have a 3.8 FSU gpa, & have 1190/1830 SATs

Foxfire, rush starts Monday and dorms open Wed, but if you are signed up for rush by the deadline (usually early August) you can move into the dorms Monday at noon and rush starts a few hours later. Moving in for those going through rush is HECTIC, and you will unpack and get your room ready a little at a time. Your parents will be frustrated because you have only a few hours to unload and unpack before you start the first round of rush which lasts a good 5 hours the first day- like 4pm-9pm. But it is only 5-6 hours the next day so you have time to finish unpacking on Tues.

Duster, You’d have to apply by petition, so follow up and get it done.

Sunnyflorida
They do let freshmen rush right? (i thought they did but someone told me they did not)

What is this “rush?”

preview and info. about sororities/fraternities

yes, freshman can rush

@tasian522

I hate to sound like a spammer here but this is DEAD honest.

Do not buy your textbooks, DO NOT BUY YOUR TEXTBOOKS! Do not even buy them from bill’s bookstore used!

As soon as you see what books you need, RENT them from CHEGG.com, you can rent them for the entire semester, I saved like $300 by renting my books, most of your books you will never use again and don’t need it, but if you do they will allow you to buy out your rental for cheap. The books are in good condition and if you rent a book that you end up not needing they let you return them for FREE within 30 days and get your money back. Plus if you end up making the mistake of buying a book, they will buy back any books that you do.

If you use promo code CC110893 you get an additional 10% off I believe.

How long does it take to get your book from Chegg?

The truth is, both Bills and the FSU bookstore are a ripoff. They over charge so much for books. I usually buy from half.com well in advance, but then you run the risk of buying a book you don’t really need.

My daughter is interested in rushing this fall as a freshman but I (as a mom) think that she should wait and ensure that she isn’t over her head academically before joining a sorority. Is there spring rush or can a sophomore rush the following fall? Also, since freshman are allowed to rush, is alcohol consumption regulated?
