Ask a Deerfield freshmen!

@Pi12345 You don’t have to go to the campus for an interview. I had mine over Skype with Mr. Irwin (He was really nice). Also make sure you start prepping for the SSAT NOW! I studied for about 3 months and I still didn’t get as high of a score as I wanted.

This may be a stupid question but what Is the SSAT? How should I prepare?

Pi12345- You would have to contact the school about that. Personally, being a tourguide, I have never encountered a student on campus for an interview/tour without a parent…but I doubt that there is something that says that you aren’t allowed to come without parents. Honestly I think that in general not having your parents on your side throughout this process would not be an easy thing. They have A LOT of paperwork that they will need to fill out for each school…and if I remember correctly they will also have to write Parent Statements which are basically mini essays that they have to write about you. …do you see what I mean? Try and convince them to come to the campus with you. I bet once they go on that tour and hear all about DA they won’t have any hesitations. But like HT2465 said, you do not have to come on campus for an interview. That’s just if you would also like to take a tour on the same day. You could always take your tour and interview on different days…but it is not required that you come on campus.

HT2465: Welcome to the Class of 2015! I speak for all of us when I say welcome to DA. What forms did she not send in? I doubt that something missing will be too much of a hassle–if Deerfield hasn’t called you yet then it must not be urgent.
As for Rosenwald Shumway we refer to it as RoSho for short and it’s a great dorm. Close to all academic buildings, the health center, and most importantly…the dining hall :smiley: The rooms there are great and I’d say it’s the ideal upperclassmen girls dorm!
There is some paperwork that has to be filled out but I would contact the school about needing a parent/guardian. I doubt that there is anything extensive that has to be done on arrival day so I would say that us big bad juniors can handle it ourselfves.
NO QUESTION IS A STUPID QUESTION WHEN IT COMES FOR PREPARING FOR BOARDING SCHOOL. Summer before my freshmen year my green key answered about 20 emails a day filled with questions.
Sperry shoes are worn here and if I could single out one shoe brand it would be the ever-present Jack Rogers. I don’t own a pair but they are a classic prep shoe that you’ll find on any new england prep school campus. Hunter rainboots are both popular and practical (for the winter) as well as L.L Bean boots. In reality any shoe is fine but I wouldn’t suggest wearing heels to class because there truly is no need.
If you look on page 25? My first post on that page should help you out with what kind of things we wear to class and sit down. Not too fancy but also not too casual, basically. Unless it’s like Christmas dinner…then we dress up a bit more.
Denunzio Disco is the big dance at the beginning of the year which is usually the most memorable as a new student. You wear the craziest neon clothes that you can find.
There are tons of things but I can’t necessarily think of them off the top of my head. I know tha there is some “Ultimat Boarding School Supply Packing List” somewhere around here on CC. That should help you out. Also snacks are always good. Sorry to keep referencing old responses but maybe like 2 pages ago I wrote about what to bring. If I think of any specifics I’ll post them here again!!

Hope everyone is having a fantastic summer!

The SSAT is the exam that you have to take as a part of your boarding school application. You should prepare by buying an SSAT practice booklet and doing some work out of it!

@Pi12345

The SSAT stands for Secondary School Admissions Test. You have to take the test to get into most boarding schools. Its made up of a verbal section, math section and a reading comprehension section. If I had to pick the hardest section it would be the verbal. I literally made almost 1000 (I counted) note cards over the span of 3 months and I only scored in the 90th percentile. If also focus on math. It’s mostly Algebra 1 and a little bit of Geometry. Since I had already completed those subjects, I didn’t really study for that section of the test. Big mistake. I scored in the 67th percentile. Although, I did omit a majority of the math questions as well. The reading wasn’t that bad. Just read the passages carefully. You also have to write a timed essay. Just practice and you’ll be fine. If you have a question, you can also ask me

Is there a certain practice book you suggest I get? Thanks to both of you for being so nice

No problem. I’d suggest the Princeton Review book! It’s said to be the best out there

Deerfield is the my number one choice for prep schools. My older brother went to Deerfield too. I play Soccer, Hockey and Baseball. My GPA ranges from 3.9 to 4.1. i’ll be taking all honor classes this year and two math classes as well as being a part of the student council. How are my chances?

Unfortunately, even with your wonderul stats, there is no certainty when determining who will be admitted in any given year to a prep school. I’m glad to hear that it’s your first choice, though!
I can tell you that you sound like a great canidate and the fact that the three sports that you play are in three separate terms is definitely a plus. Are you going into the 8th grade? I’d say to just work very hard on your admissions essays, be yourself during your interviews, and keep doing well in school! Let me know if I can help you at all during your admissions process.

@bingalot-thanks for answering my question. I cant PM you right now because I need fifteen posts :(

@HT2465 Hey I’m joining Deerfield class of 2015 as well! (hence my username). See you in Deerfield soon :)

@loco4cocoa-- Well now you have 15 posts!!lol

So I’m going to new England this October and I hope that maybe I should schedule an interview with Deerfield then. What should I have completed before my interview?

You don’t have to have anything completed before your interview! Just come ready with a lot of questions if you plan on going on a tour. As a tourguide, I can tell you from experience that the tour goes by much more smoothly when not just the parents are asking the questions! Don’t be scared to ask your tourguide something if you are wondering about it. And don’t worry if you forget to ask something–your tourguide will give you their card at the end of the tour with both their name and email on it!!

Are there vegan options (besides salad bar) at every meal?

I don’t know of there being a specific vegan option at every meal? I can assure that there are both gluten free and vegetarian options, though.

Why is a Deerfield freshman “freshmen”?

Well I could say that it’s because there was more than one freshman answering questions but that still wouldn’t make sense considering the fact that the “a” is there, would it? So I’ll admit that the “freshmen”/“freshman” was just a mistake on my behalf!! Sorry if it bothers you-it bothers me too- but I’m not sure that making a new thread to fix the name would be worth it considering how many views/responses this one has.

I was wondering in the winter, does a down jacket count as a “second layer” (for the dress code)? Or do most people wear a sweater inside the jacket?

@sprinkles926 During the winter it’s still necessary to wear a sweater under your jacket to be in dress code. But the outside is frigid and the buildings are quite toasty, so it’s actually a plus to wear the sweater so that you can peel off layers/add them if you get too hot or cold.
