The Deerfield viewbook says you have a 10mm track, and I assume it’s supposed to be 100m, because 10 millimeters is quite small. :)

…well that should probably be fixed? hahaha

10mm is the thickness of the track…“an eight-lane 10mm full pour track surface”…

Well there you go^. Can you tell that I know nothing about track whatsoever? It’s fun to watch the meets, though. And you’re almost guaranteed to see someone that you know from another school because the teams are sooooo large.

@walnuthill Thanks!

bingalot - can you rearrange the furniture in your dorm or is it attached to the wall/floor so that everyone’s room is arranged the same way?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1530010-rice-university-chances.html

@walnuthill in certain dorms (John Williams, John Louis, New Dorm and I think Louis Marx) the desks (which are really nice ad really large) are attached to the wall, but other than that all of the furniture can rearranged in any way you like.

@walnuthill - What deerfield15 said. But I’d like to add that not every room on the hall will be set up the exact same way (windows may be in different places, etc) and so the way the furniture is set up in the person’s room that lives down the hall may not exactly work for your room. So I’d say that most of the time the way that the room is set up when you get there works best…but like deerfield15 said you can change things around if you’d like!

What’s the vibe in Pocumtuck? How are the halls (corridors?) in this dorm set up? They look to be really long, is this a big dorm and is that good or bad?

Well see this question is kind of complicated. Both for my freshman year and sophomore year poc, (we just call it poc), was a junior/senior year. But the year before I came to DA it was an underclassmen dorm and obviously it’s turning back into and underclassmen girls dorm for next year.
Poc is a large dorm. It has 3 floors and if I remember correctly it does have fairly large hallways. What do you mean by how are the halls set up, though?
It is a big dorm but I can’t tell you if it’s good or bad–there are pros and cons each way. Be excited! Think of it this way: you’ll get to meet a lot of new people right off the bat. And if you need to borrow or need help with or homework there sure are a lot of people that you can ask!!

@bing - I mean how are the groups of girls and proctors organized? The email says there are 8 frosh 11 soph and 3 seniors in Poc 2 (is that the 2nd floor?) Does that mean the 3 seniors are proctors for all the frosh/soph or are they assigned to specific girls? Just trying to understand how it all works. Thanks!

Yes, that does mean that the 3 seniors are proctors for all of the sophomores and freshmen. Yes, Poc 2 is the second floor of Poc. I know the whole living situation may seem confusing now but I promise that it’ll make sense once you arrive on campus.
Freshmen and sophomores live in underclasssmen dorms with proctors who serve as your big-sister-types I guess you could say. They live with you for the entire year and you really get to know each other over the course of it. They sometimes give the hall feeds (after study hall snacks) and for one night out of the week they are in charge of being on duty for the night (which means they are in charge or watching everyone during study hall on that night. They also choose a theme for your hall (superheroes, movies, etc) so that your hall isn’t completely bare and without decorations when you arrive!
Not everyone can be a proctor, though–they went through a very rigorous process in order to get the position. You’ve got some great proctors!!
As far as you being assigned to a certain person? I think that you may have been thinking of green keys whose job it is to get you acquainted with Deerfield life in the opening days (show you to your classes and stuff). Green keys are different in the sense that they are not seniors and they do not live with you. They also applied for their positions, though. And like the peer counselors they go through training before the new students arrive on campus. You received a post card from your green key a few weeks ago I believe.

Does that make sense? I know that it may seem a little confusing right now but all will be explained once you arrive on campus. If you have any questions you can ask me!! You can also contact your green key or your proctors. It is in their job despcriptions after all :D

Does each dorm room have a mirror or do students have to bring their own? Also, how much does it cost to use the laundry machienes and where are they located? Lastly how is the weather around the beginning of the school year? How warm is it? Coming from Texas, it’s usually around the 90s. When does it start to cool down? oh do any of you have an instagram or facebook? It would be nice to match a face to a name. Thanks Y’all!

There is a full length mirror on the back of every door in each dorm room so you don’t need to bring your own unless for some reason you want more than one. The washers and dryers are in the basements of each of the residential buildings. it cost 75 cents to wash one load and 75 cents to dry it, so in total it’s $1.50 to do a load of laundry…so definitely stock up on quarters if you plan on doing your own laundry, you’ll appreciate it later. And the weather in the fall is generally still pretty warm (like mid 80s to upper 70s) but it is New England, so some days in can be hotter than that, and you’ll sometimes see it be cooler. Come October, you’ll really start to see fall temps, like low 70s, and mid 50s toward the end, so you probably would want some lightweight sweaters and pants just in case it is colder than that. Freshmen year on halloween we had a huge snowstorm so the best advice is really to just have some of everything because you really never know what the weather has in store. And you can PM me for my insta and Facebook :)

You can PM me for my instagram and facebook as well!!

At DA, do girls wear wedges/heeled sandals or booties to class?

Little to no people do/ I would not suggest it. Think about it, you have to get from building to building with a lot of people trying to go to the same place that you are. Sometimes it’s raining. Sometimes you’re running late. Some classes are on the third floor…heels just make things 10 times harder!! But hey, if you only have like 2 classes one day I guess you could go for it. But again, don’t think that you’ll be out of place for never wearing heels to class. I’ve seen maybe 3 people do it in all of my time at DA.

Hey, it’s me again. Gosh I’m on here a lot. I might as well just have you on speed dial. Ha. Anyway on to the real question -> Do you think Deerfield would let me arrive around 8PM on the third instead of coming in at 9 AM on the fourth? I ended up booking a flight and I won’t be able to get there around 9AM on the 4th. The earliest I could make it would be 11PM on the 4th if I switched my flight. Have students (besides the international) ever had to come earlier because of scheduling issues. Oh and I’m coming by myself. Fun!

Hi everyone! I’m going to be a freshman at Deerfield this fall and I am super excited! How many clothes should I bring? Like how many shirts, sweaters, pants, dresses and skirts? Or what have you brought in the past? I want to have enough outfits but not to have an overflowing closet! And is there laundry service or do you have to pay and wash your clothes yourself? Any essential items you suggest packing? Thanks!
