@HT2465 hahahah it’s fine–I literally had so many questions coming into Deerfield.
Now to answer your question I’d say no but maybe if your mom makes a call to DA you can work something out. It would be a special circumstance in your case (because you’re arriving by yourself). So, maybe they’d allow it? I have never known anyone that has had to come to campus early but I’m sure something could be arranged for you!
@greenwichgirl You should be excited!!! BUT
I may not be the best person to ask about this…lol. I say that because I tend to be the “overpacking” type. deerfield15 may be a bit more practical so I’ll let her speak on the specific numbers. I’d say to bring a variety of clothing! Bring fancy dresses as well as class dress dresses…and make sure you have the staples. A black dress, black cardigan, white cardigan, etc. But in all honesty I’d say that it’s better to have more than less in this case! You could always put stuff in storage or pack it up and leave it at home during the next break!!
Let me know if you have any other questions. Go big green!!

@greenwichgirl

At least bingalot knows her weaknesses! lol, but I’d say that you need at least 4 cardigans, 1 white, 1 navy blue, 1 black and 1 bright color (def add more if you’d like). Lots of pullover sweaters of different styles and colors seeing as you’ll be wearing a lot of them in the winter. You’ll also need a solid supply of cords (maybe 5 pairs?) for winter because they too are a staple, But if you want to wait until later and have your parents bring those to, you, you can do that too. Dresses are a crucial portion of every Deerfield girl’s wardrobe, so possibly 10+ dresses would do. As mentioned before on this thread, BRING LOTS OF SOCKS… seems silly, but I learned the hard way that having a few pairs of socks just doesn’t work unless you plan on doing laundry every other day. In general have the pieces that you do bring (though there is a decent amount of space, it’s not unlimited) be versatile. You can always mix and match and have very cool outfits. And bring a couple of your favorite items, even though they might not necessarily be the most practical. It’s important not to loose yourself in the fashion culture at DA and to remember to embrace your own personal style.

There is a laundry service, so you don’t have to do your laundry if you don’t want to. Lots of people use E&R (the laundry service) but from time to time you’ll probably have to do like athletic gear yourself with the washers and dryers that are located in the basement of each dorm (they take quarters, so stock up) And for essentials not to miss…make sure to bring yoga pants (MAJOR staple) and Uggs, you’ll thank yourself.

@HT2465 Freshman year I came bak early because I couldn’t get a flight for the next day and after contacting the school they wanted me early instead of missing move in day and orientation, so call them up and I’m sure that they’ll be more than happy to accommodate you. And I’m coming back a little later on the day that I’m supposed to be back (by myself too, so you’re not alone there) and after asking the deans, they were fine with it.

Thanks guys! I called the school this morning and they said I can come in on the third. I’ll be arriving at DA around 8. SO relieved. No more freaking out. well at least until I figure out how much stuff I have to add to my wardrobe. Ha. -_-

How did you handle the admissions process. I’ve read the DA website, but still feel very overwhelmed by everything you have to do.

@HT2465 I’m so glad that things are working out! You’ll have to let me and deerfield15 know when you arrive on campus so that we can all meet up and actually talk in person:D If you ever need wardrobe advice don’t hesitate to ask…that’s right up my alley!!
@Boarderhopeful I think that the most important thing to do is be rational in the grand scheme of applying to prep school. As in, will you really have time to apply to 10 schools? I mean, that’s about 2 essays per school–and could you really see yourself attedning those 3 schools that you added to the list because someone told you to? Do your research and make sure that wherever you apply you could see yourself being happy there. And also make sure that you KNOW YOUR DEADLINES. Know when the SSAT test is able to be taken in your area, know when apps are do, be on top of scheduling interviews. I know that it seems like a lot but honestly I applied to 4 schools and never felt that stressed out during the process. We had folders for each school with the apps in them and whatnot…we were organized. Be organized and your process will be much smoother. Just remember to relax…it is just highschool after all…so don’t stress yourself out too much.
I feel like I’m repeating myself at this point. Did I help at all?

@bingalot thanks! That was really helpful

Thanks so much answering bingalot and deerfield15!!

Oh, do you need to bring extra storage for your dorm? Like shelves or under the bed drawers?

You’re welcome @Boarderhopeful and @greenwichgirl!! I’m just glad that I’m able to answer any questions that you all may have. I know that when deerfield15 and I were lurking the CC threads as 8th graders the most updated thread about DA hadn’t been updated for years!
@greenwichgirl Extra storage is nice but nothing huge like an armoire because Deerfield provides closet space and dresser space. If anything you may think of investing in underneath the bed storage for toiletries or towels…like I said nothing too big. But yes, I would definitely say to bring extra storage bins since you could either choose to put things under the bed or in the basement of your dorm so as not to take up any space in your room.

@deerfield15 & bingalot, I don’t mean to sound creepy but I’ve been following this thread, do you guys mind sharing your facebook with me too? I don’t know anyone at Deerfield and I’m coming in next year haha.

@greenwichgirl I have like a 4 wire shelf/stand thingy that I’m going to use with bins for extra storage ( I tend to keep EVERYTHING, so I need a bit more space than say bingalot who is pretty good about not keeping unnecessary things) so something like that might work for you, but you’ll probably want to stay away from anything too big so that your room doesn’t start to feel too cramped.

@deerfieldda2015 Sure!! and you don’t sound creepy at all. I met bingalot over CC and now we’re really good friends, so go for it!

@deerfielda2015 New friends are always welcome!! Send me a PM with your name

P.S – the four of us 2015ers will have to set up a time to chat within the hectic first week of school if not the first day that we get back! We can hold up signs with our usernames on them and everything

That would be so much fun!
@bingalot I’m going to hold you to that. I’ll be looking for that sign.

Do you think you could chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1535081

I can’t chance you; no one can really. You seem like a qualified applicant but so much more goes into the acceptance process than most people think. You could be very qualified–unbelieveably qualified–but it just so happens that you play one sport and they need someone who plays another.
So don’t worry about someone “chancing you”. You’ll look like a fine applicant on paper. Let your personality shine through during your interviews and essays because that’s what wll set you apart from the rest.

Thanks, that actually helped a lot (I get how you can’t really “chance” someone now)

@HT2465, bingalot, deerfield15 and deerfielda2015 I’m also going to be a new junior this year at DA and I’m super excited! Like deerfielda2015 and HT2465 already said, I’ve recently read this forum and would love to connect names to faces (Facebook is best for me). I don’t want to sound sketchy but it would be great if y’all PMed me your names and then maybe we can start a group message on fb! I think doing lunch or something at DA in the fall would also be fantastic. Can’t wait to meet y’all in September!!

@DA201527

Welcome to the club. Can’t wait to see you in the fall.

2015 is loud and proud on this thread! Glad to see it. We’re going to need this togetherness to get through junior year :D
