Ask a Deerfield freshmen!

@DA201527 so excited to see you in the fall :)

I need help, I don’t know how to ask questions and I have questions to ask please help!

We can’t help you if you don’t know what you need help with!
For starters, will you be applying to DA in the fall? Have you already been accepted?

I just got my schedule and I looked at the New Student Facebook. It’s so cool to see who is going to be in your class in the fall even though more than half of them didn’t upload a picture… including me :

I’m going to put a photo up tonight. At least I pawn on it. There’s a new student page. What’s it called?

Would you recommend a backpack or a tote bag for carrying books and stuff to class?

@HT2465- here’s the link https://dainfo.deerfield.edu/dainfo/facebook/

@greenwichgirl your books will probably be too heavy for you to comfortably use a tote bag to carry them. Most people use backpacks.

If you could describe deerfield in 1 word, what would it be?

The first thing that comes to mind is tradition! Both the lasting ones and the start of new ones have really made my Deerfield memories and experiences what they are today.

Thanks, I always wondered how people would describe deerfield.

What was your first night/day of deerfield like? Was it overwhelming? Were you homesick?

Do you want to know what my first day/night was like as a Deerfield freshman on campus? Or off of campus? Technically I was at the freshmen retreat about an hour away from campus on my first “Deerfield day/night”.

Whoops, sorry to confuse you! I meant your first day/night on campus. But now that you mentioned it, what was the retreat like? What did you do (activities, bonding, etc.)? Was it fun? Did you like it?

Oh it’s no problem at all! haha, I just wanted to make sure that I told you about what you asked about.
I’ll start with the retreat (Camp Becket) since that is what happenned first. I’m not going to lie and say that I enjoyed every minute of it. Were there times where I ever concidered that coming to DA was a bad choice, though? No. It was a typical freshman experience of displacement and and excitement and I look back on my orientation experience very fondly. I sit with friends attempting to remember exactly who the people were that slept with us in our cabins and how exactly we all met. It truly is a great bonding experience…you play games, canoe, and let the fact that you’ll be with the people around you for the next 4 years. Overall I enjoyed it!
Sorry to get super specific again, but do you mean the first day of classes?lol. I don’t really remember mine all that well…heck, I can barely remember my freshmen year schedule! Actually-that’s a lie. I do remember my schedule but I can honestly say that I don’t remember anything bad about the first day of classes. I was just soaking everything in! I didn’t get lost (my green key showed me where everything was the day before), my teachers were smiling and welcoming, and so were my classmates. The first day of classes is always so new and exciting–teachers tell you what to bring for school supplies the next day and…yeah!
Any other questions? Hopefully you can kind of get a feel for what the first DA days are like.

Thanks! You gave me everything I wanted to know! The retreat sounds really fun, and a great way to meet people. And the first day of classes sound easy going.

Sure, no problem! But also remember that different people handle things in different ways. I’m pretty easygoing…in my years at DA I have never really been homesick. But DA does do a pretty good job of getting kids accustomed to the change in lifestyle witthin the first few days of arriving at DA.

@bingalot

Are the retreats only for freshman?

Yes, the camp Becket retreat is only for freshmen.
But don’t worry! New sophomores, juniors, and seniors have their own orientation activities on campus!

What activities do the new juniors have?

Well as far as I know new juniors are scheduled to have a planned Q&A session and then there are several dinners and other orientation activities that are going to take place with the Green Key leaders. I can’t tell you specifics really–everything I know comes from this:
