Ask a GWU student about applications!

Hi! If you are applying or are thinking about applying to GW, feel free to ask me some questions about the application process or the school!

Some info about me:
GW was my first choice. My SAT combined score was 1920 and my GPA was 3.8. I had various extracurriculars and community service experience. I also applied and was accepted to SUNY Albany, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY New Paltz, American University, And Ithaca. Feel free to ask me about those schools as well!

Hi! I am planning to apply to GW in the fall and it is in my top 2 schools! Are you an international relations major?
Do you think I will get in with a 31 ACT and a 3.7UW GPa?

@ccolumbus79329 Did you get any merit money at either GWU or American? My D is considering both of those schools. Why did you choose GWU over American?

How is the student body? (is everyone preppy, how many kids from the south compared to the north, is there racial diversity) and I don’t know if I want to do international affairs or just political science so do I just apply to GW or do I have the choose which school Im applying too?

@neuprospect98 I’m not an international relations major and I am actually in a different school. I am studying political science, which is under the Colombian college of arts and sciences. If you are international relations, you would be applying to the Elliott school of international relations. Your ACT scores and GPA sound very impressive, bbut I would also highlight your extra curricular activities and any community service experiences that you’ve had in your application. In my interview I was asked a lot about me and my hobbies, interests, and classes, etc because GW really cares about the idea that if you go to GW you enter the GW community. GW is a really awesome school for international relations and so many people go to GW specifically for that reason so it’s an awesome choice! If hi have any more questions feel free to ask!

@me29034 I got merit money both at GW and American although I do know that it’s harder to get money at GW. We originally got money at GW and appealed to get more and actually did receive a small amount. At American I got money too, which was a large amount, however, it was mostly in loans so that was inconvenient because it amounted to be a lot of loans after the four years. Financial aid is tricky though because it’s such a case by case thing. But, I ultimately chose GW over American because the location for GW is much more in the metro area, and I didn’t tour American but from online tours, etc. i liked the GW campus better. Also , because of the better offers at GW, my decision was a lot easier. Both are great schools, but it came down to locations, facilities, size and things a long that line. It seemed like a better fit for me. I always think it’s a good idea to tour both (which is easy cause they’re so close) and decide!

@2016senior The student body is very diverse because there are a lot of international students as well as students from the west coast and the south and all over the country! However, there are a lot of students from the New England area and from Virginia. GW is an expensive school and is in an expensive city, so there are a lot of rich kids, however, as someone who is not rich I don’t feel out of place. However, the school does make a point to make sure the class is diverse. There’s so much to do around the area and it’s a sizable campus, so there is doubt you will find your people! Also in terms of applying, you will put down your intended major (don’t worry if you have no idea, you can put down undecided and you don’t officially declare a major until sophomore year) however they will accept you into the school that corresponds with the major you put down. So for instance I put down political science, so I was accepted into the Colombian college of arts and sciences (which is the same if you put down undecided). But if you were interested in international relations, or put down East Asian studies of something along those lines, you would be accepted into a different school (the Elliott school). And if you don’t get your first choice you may get your second if you’re accepted, and you can always apply to switch, which seems like a straightforward process. Hope this helped!

@ccolumbus79329 thank you, Im visiting in a few weeks so Ill get a small feel of how the campus is.

@2016senior woo!!! Have fun!!! Def visit the mount Vernon campus and the foggy bottom campus!!! And so much good food around there!

@ccolumbus79329 any food recommendations? and Is looking at the Mount Vernon campus worth the time?

@2016senior founding farmers is a restaurant that a lot of people like as well as burger tap & shake and tonic @ quigleys pharmacy. And i would def go to MVC because you can see where the fields are and it’s a different feel than on the foggy bottom campus and if you do end up applying you have to take classes there freshman year. It’s pretty out there so if you have a car it’s worth the 10 minute drive, but if not it’s not a huge loss!

Is it possible to double major across schools? As in would I be able to double major in political science and international affairs? Also do you know how many people double major?

Yes you can, but there are a lot of exceptions. I don’t think you can do political science and international affairs because that’s the arts and sciences school and the school of international affairs. But there is a reason. You wouldn’t want to do this because of the many requirements they both have and it would just be impossible to complete. My suggestion for you is to do the Colombian college because you can take classes in comparative politics for example, also you have more classes to experiment with. I’m not sure how many people double major, but it’s definitely not unheard of. Many people also pick up minors in things as well. This website is helpful if you wanna do more reading

How do you demonstrate interest for GW?

@beegee123 @ccolumbus79329 HI! I was just in contact with a George Washington admissions counselor and she told me it is 100% possible to double major in political Science and international Relations. She said that they both have lengthy requirements, but many of the requirements overlap so you can kill two birds with one stone. Hope this helps you.

@neuprospect98 awesome! thanks for the update! I wouldn’t worry too much yet about what you are thinking about majoring in, but what’s great about GW and good to think about during the application process is that you have the opportunity to do these things at your school of choice!

@2016senior there are many ways to show interest in GW. What I would do is go on a tour! That way it is in the system that you made the effort to look at the school. Don’t worry if you live too far away or if it would be too expensive because the school knows that tours can be hard for people to do. Also, do an interview! GW has students come to cities all over the country so look out for dates when representatives offering interviews will be near you. Interviews are optional, but they definitely give you a leg up because an actual student from GW will be able to evaluate how much of a match you are with the school, how large your interest with the school is, etc. If you really want to show interest and really go far, email some teachers that teach classes you would be interested in taking and ask them questions, etc. Also if your school does rep visits, where people from GW come to your high school, attend those and normally they write the names down of students that come to the meeting. Also you have room in your supplement essay in your application to show your interest in GW and why you fit there! Feel free to ask any more questions!

Would you recommend taking the ACT in order to get into GW? I already took the SAT, and did well, but considering the new test-optional policy, would you say the ACT is still an important factor?

@Morse15 I just visited and the view I got is that the test optional is not going to have a major effect on admissions. I The test optional is meant for students who have high GPAs, good ecs, etc. but have test scores below the range of admitted students.

@Morse15 If you have already taken the SAT and are happy with your score then don’t bother with the ACT. One test score is enough. Considering they’re optional now, the only time they should really matter is if a person has a lower GPA but a stellar test score.
