you need to buy an ethernet cord. there are 2 phone jack things in each room where you will plug one end of the cord in. so everytime you are in your room (or someone else’s room) you will need your ethernet cord but everytime you are on the wireless network you just have to log in with your TCNJ login. oh and the first time you log onto the wireless you will have to enter in this long code. i think you get it from the desk in the library.

hey hazeleyez:
I was wondering how many tvs are typical for a dorm room…like do both roomates usually have their own tv?

Well considering the size of the room, I think two would be a waste of space.

yeah most people have only one tv, and that’s if they even have a tv at all lol. actually, i think there may be only one cable jack per room. a lot of people will also watch tv on their laptops. someone even had a pretty large sized tv that they put in our floor lounge so we had lots of movie nights. my floor was awesome when it came to floor bonding lol

were the bathrooms in the dorms really nasty? and when do they clean them? i know they do it everyday but what time? and do they ever get crowded, idk how many toilets/showers are in them

Bathrooms are clean unless your floor purposely makes them dirty. Cleaning is around 10ish in the morning I think. They are only crowded during welcome week when everyone has the same schedule. 4 toilets and 4 showers.

if you end up in Cromwell you will be cleaning your own bathroom (and it’s really not all that bad- you can set up a schedule with your suitemates). there’s 1 toilet, 1 shower and 2 sinks

I know that at a few of the colleges I visited the upperclassmen that live with the freshmen (are they called community advisers or something) get to live in the dorms for free. is that how it is at TCNJ too? what are the perks of being one here, and how would i become one next year if i wanted to?

Hi, I’ll be a freshman and I need to go about getting a laptop. Is TCNJ a PC school, or would I be fine with a Mac? I’d prefer to get a Mac but if I’d run into any incompatibility of some sort I’ll just get a PC. Does it matter which?

Either is fine.

If you end up in cromwell, do you need to bring a floor lamp as suggested?

If you bring something you’re not supposed to and the college finds out what do they do? They said we’re not allowed to bring bed risers but I looked at the bed and they don’t seem high up off the ground. Would it really be the big of a deal? It’s not like they’re a hazard.

YES! bring a floor lamp or some form of lighting if you end up in Cromwell. There is no overhead lighting whatsoever in the rooms.

If you bring something that you are not allowed to have they will find out and will most definitely tell you to get rid of it. Your CA’s will (or at least should) stop in to your rooms and say hi every now and then. Also, they will randomly check rooms during fire drills and they check every room during breaks when the halls are closed. If you have something that is not allowed you will be given a warning letter telling you to get rid of it. It won’t go on your “record” until they catch you a second time with it.

Bed risers don’t seem like they’re a hazard but because you are told not to have them you really cannot have them. My roommate and I got a letter about a floor-to-ceiling metal pole with baskets on it but we spoke to our CA about it because technically we were never told we couldn’t have it (our CAs had seen it countless times and never said anything) and it wasn’t in a place that caused any obstruction. In the end we never had to get rid of it.

Thanks hazeleyez. Is there anything else you would recommend to bring? for example, closet space hangars or baskets, under the bed storage containers, or anything else to give you more places to put stuff in. Are bed risers allowed in cromwell and do you need them? I am aware of the refrig you can rent, but wondering are microwaves allowed in the dorm?

A closet organizer might be handy, but I did just fine without one (and I’m a girl lol). The closets are decent sized and you get a dresser as well. I’m not sure about the beds in the Towers but I know the ones in Cromwell are different heights. When the beds are unbunked the bed that would go on top is taller. This allows for great storage space. My suitemate had plastic buckets that she put underneath her bed. The bottom bed though has two drawers (kinda shallow) you can put stuff in. Bed risers are not allowed at all.

Yes, you can have a microwave but it cannot be larger than 0.9 cubic feet. You are allowed to have a coffee maker but you are technically only allowde to use it in your floor’s lounge.

Get a really good fan. I also brought a vacuum with me. You can always go borrow one from the hall office but I got a really cheap one and it was really useful. Quite a lot of people on my floor borrowed it frequently. Also, if you do not have them yet go out and get rainboots!!! (or at least some kind of rain gear) especially a really strong umbrella.

What’s the T/W Beach? I know it’s not like a real beach, but what’s there

Ummm that’s probably the area of grass right outside of T/W and Cromwell. When it’s really hot out a lot of people sit outside and sunbathe/do homework/etc. I’ve never heard it referred to it as that but when I walked outside one insanely hot day I do remember thinking to myself that it looked like a beach lol. There is a volleyball court near the tennis courts that a lot of people use too.

Would have never thought about a vacuum or fan, thanks. Do you need a rug in the room? What about a shower curtain? I never visited the dorms at cromwell.

GET A GOOD FAN!!! lol it gets really hot in the rooms during the first two months or so (welcome week was brutal last year). this is especially true if you are on one of the higher floors of the towers because heat rises.

apparently cleaning is not one of a college kid’s many priorities lol. if you end up in Cromwell you will also need to bring cleaning supplies for the bathroom. also, if you are in Cromwell bring AT LEAST 2 shower curtains AND rings. oh and make sure the curtains are not see through!!! you will need them to cover the toilet and shower areas. the college provides a curtain for the shower itself but a lot of people brought their own. just make sure it is extra long. if you are in the towers you do not need to bring curtains.

A rug is not essential but we had a small area rug anyway. the bookstore even sells large rugs that cover the entire floor so some people bought those. personally, i think rugs are harder to clean than tile.

How are the mattresses in the dorm? Do you recommend an extra padding for them or not?
