Ask NYU Stern Freshman Anything!

@sundychen95, sorry (I’m not deathblade) but yes it does! It says so on NYU’s Admissions page under “Considered” that First Generation helps a lot.

what is it like with no campus? Can you still maintain contact. What is the social scene like? Are the “parties” more going out then a classic dorm party or something

Does NYU have a lot of hipsters? Would a white, conservative guy more into sports than music and art, from the suburbs have trouble fitting in?

America, I can answer both those questions for you, since I’ve been to NYU campus with a friend before

Right, since it’s not really a campus, parties are generally limited to dorms and floors, not very crazy, since the RA’s are extremely strict. Therefore, clubs and bars generally are good locations to hang out, and chillin with others is extremely easy. Starbucks, movies, etc. NY is a very lively area.

NYU does have the fair share of hipsters and liberals, but it isn’t too terrible to fit in. Everyone is very open minded of others, however stubborn they may be (kinda paradoxish haha), and my friends (now at stern) and I are all huge nba/nfl fans. Fantasy leagues for daysss

I took IB, so I don’t have much experience with AP. However, I think Stats, Calc AB/BC are probably the most useful AP’s…maybe a 4 or 5 in a science AP to waive natural science.

Hey, I don’t want to be too specific, but my GPA (converted) was close to a 4.0, SAT was between 2100-2200, more towards the higher end, and I was quite active in technological entrepreneurship in highschool. Anymore you want to know?

The other few questions, I think were quite well answered by the other users.

hey, deathblade

Did you send IB predicted grades? if yes, what score? And what was the actual score? A list of courses and grades would be perfect! I’m an IB student as well.

What is a usual Stern student day like? At what time does your lessons start/end?

Yeah, I submitted predicted grades. My PG was quite high, like 40+/42, but my final score was a good 4-5 points lower hehe. Took HL math, physics, chem, SL Japanese, English, History.

I can’t speak for every Stern student, but I can certainly speak for myself. My schedule is pretty nice, lessons usually start 11 am, except for Monday which starts 2 pm, and Friday, a 9.30 recitation. I go to lessons, and then usually I head to Bobst where I stay a good few hours, hoping to be more productive. Then, at night usually I meet a few friends, catch up, hang out. In the weekends, it’s more relaxed (loads of sleeping).

However, recently, with last two weeks, my sleep pattern is pretty messed up - i usually jump to bed at like 5 am (if i’m lucky) and sleep till 10, where I go to my 11 am class…then i come back, and then sleep from like 1 - 5 pm, and then start work…yeah, pretty messed up…If you can manage your time properly (quite difficult as a freshman), then you can probably enjoy more sleep ~ I doubt I’m sleeping tonight, got a WTE essay due tomorrow…

anyone else?

Thanks for your help! I am accepted!! Stern class of 2018!

Congrats! Feeling excited?

Do you know if NYU superscores?
On my first SAT, I got a 610 M, 600 CR, 750 W (please don’t ask hahaha)
On the second, I got a 730 M, 720 CR, 640 W (I’m weird)
Do you think I should send both or just the second?

Wait never mind I just noticed the no chance thing sorry

Hello Deathblade,
I’m a Chinese student who just got acceptance to CAS and majored in math. I will probably pursue my further learning either in engineering or finance. Can I change major when I find my interest? Is that easy? Thanks.

Do you get exempted from WTE if you have a 750 or above on SAT writing?

What would you say are the 3 most social dorms? I’ve heard 3N and Hayden, but is there a third good social dorm? and which is the best of the three?

I’m a Stern freshman right now so i can answer a few question since i dont feel like studying for finals.
@Sundy, yes you are exempt from WTE but you will have to take commerce and cultures instead which is a more business focused writing class. if you can take that class bc WTE is a huge pain in the ass.
@maybeNYU, Hayden is definitely one of the most social dorms, founders is pretty social too. I live at 3rd North and I literally know no one here but it may just be me. For the most part though it is not actually that social except maybe east tower
@ZZK1120 internal transfers are just as hard as external transfers at around a 10% rate so although its hard to transfer to Stern (which is the only place you can take finance) it is possible if you work hard. Changing majors in your school is not hard.

a piece of advice i can give is unless you like smoking with koreans all the time, working out at palladium, or having a kitchen, find a dorm closer to your classes. It takes me 15-20 minutes to get to some of my classes and sometimes i just don’t go because it’s so freaking far

Yo, I’ve read everything here, but I’ll respond to you all tomorrow after my final =p. Sorry for the wait.

What do I need to transfer to Stern? Maybe like a 3.8 GPA or like demanding courses?

Got into NYU Stern ED so I’m super super excited! Also have a lot of questions, so I apologize in advance if it seems overbearing.

What’s your experience been like picking classes on Albert? I’ve heard some people say that it’s difficult or it crashes? Is it difficult to get into the classes you want to be in?

Is the WTE class that bad? I didn’t get a 750 on the SAT Writing section, so I’m going to call NYU tomorrow to get some details on what the exact policy is. If the SAT Writing is the only way to go though, should I go take the SAT again just for the exemption? The alternative writing course seems really interesting.

How close do you get with the other members in your cohort? Do you get any input on the forming of the cohort or does NYU decide?

Do clubs meet every day during Common Hour? How often do alumni visit?

How was your experience in the Give A Spit Challenge?

What’s your advice to best ease the transition into life in college?

I feel stupid for asking this but… Do you get to wear a suit every day to class?

That’s all my questions for now! Sorry I’m asking so many, but I figured you might be the best source for answers since you’re experiencing it all right now haha

Fingers crossed you did well on the final!
