@TomSrOfBoston Sorry I meant 9 classes
You’re auto-enrolled for classes in your major for the most part but will pick 1-2 classes, and changes of section time/professor are also possible. Earlier does have an advantage in that way, but it’s not absolutely crucial as there will still be options later. You can check your schedule now (Fall registration already happened so the schedules for those who have committed should be available now/soon) I believe on myNortheastern to see what changes are needed (and look at class offerings/availability).
There’s a great site made by a CS major here called searchneu.com that makes for a bit easier searching than the standard portal if you’re simply exploring classes.
Every 16 credits or so equals a semester saved depending on the specific credits and carefully designing your schedule, so yes it is possible. I saved a semester with 22 credits and used the credits to allow for a light semester (3 classes) before my first co-op even to give more time for co-op searching.
My stepdaughter attends NEU and my kid got accepted to UCSB for CS this year. I would say that NEU has a very interesting program for Cybersecurity which is attractive. Not many schools have this at the undergrad level. UC-Berkeley (where my kid is going) has it at the grad school level. The stepdaughter (not a CS major) will do her co-op in Switzerland this summer. She really loves the school, it’s in a vibrant part of Boston close to Fenway Park and it seems to be pretty generous with grants.
UCSB in most rankings is a better Computer Science school, has an excellent reputation, and a lot of corporations do recruit from there. It’s right at the beach and the airport is only a few minutes away, though there aren’t many locations where airlines fly directly to.
@PengsPhils @TomSrOfBoston can i still do the plus one program if i Double major at Northeastern?
@PengsPhils Where on My.Northeastern can you find your schedule?
@PengsPhils On searchneu.com, when the seats for a section are listed as 55/60, does that mean 55 seats are filled and only 5 remain?
@PengsPhils And what was the site where professors are rated by students?
@bethanylm291 If you hover over the numbers it says open seats / total seats. Schedules will be available under “My Schedule” - you can find it by searching under the Services and Links tab. If it’s not able to be accessed from there it may not be set yet.
Professors are rated on TRACE which you can search for in myNortheastern as well.
@plexus That’s likely entirely dependent on the combination, and you would likely need to pick one major to do the +1 in. Generally, I would say it’s doubtful but not impossible. If the +1 was important to you, a minor instead of a double major may be better suited.
Thank you @PengsPhils !
@PengsPhils my son is going to be a freshman studying computer science. What type of computer or laptop are most computer science students using? Are students bringing both to campus? He has a desktop gaming computer but no laptop.
Most everyone works on laptops, to the point that one is required for labs now (used to use desktop machines but so few needed them that the department instead lends laptops to anyone who doesn’t have one, something I’ve never seen actually happen because everyone has a laptop typically.
In terms of brands, a majority are Mac (50-60%) followed by about 20-25% each Linux/Windows. I’d personally recommend Mac if you can afford it / like the OS, and otherwise Linux. You want UNIX and Windows will be a pain point for classes like Computer Systems and others, though many courses will be fine no matter the OS. I think the Dell XPS 15 or Thinkpad X1 Carbon is the go-to non-Mac.
There are Linux/Windows machines in the lab and many people meet there and typically work with their laptops in there. While you could go without, I’d highly recommend a laptop. Gaming PC’s aren’t uncommon but are a minority, usually accompanied by a laptop.
@begosgas Here is the info on the ccis website:
The College of Computer and Information Science requires all incoming students to purchase a laptop as of Fall 2017. The College is a 50/50 split with regard to PC vs. MAC.
The following system parameters are recommended:
Minimum of 16 GB of internal memory
As much hard disk space as you can afford, 256 GB or above is recommended
The fastest current processor is not necessary. It is usually less expensive to choose a processor that is one or two steps below the fastest available.
Display of 13” with higher resolution so it’s easier to code (14” is preferred)
Insurance is recommended
myNEU has a list of vendors that provide discounts
Please contact Doreen Hodgkin (d.hodgkin@northeastern.edu) if you have any further questions.
And PLEASE do not leave your laptop unattended in the library!
I’m failing my second semester UGH as I was wondering if theres a high possibility of getting rescinded.
Basically, I have a D for AP Physics and C for AP Calc. All my other grades are A or B (mostly B). Would it be fine? (please don’t say I should try to bump my grades cuz school’s ending really soon and theres no way I can)
I also kinda failed my first semester but that was because of personal issues and I have emailed my admissions counselor and he said that it’s fine.
Generally D’s are danger territory but AP level should mean they see that as a C (internal GPA recalculation is +1 for AP). No guarantees though as it sounds like there are other circumstances in play. As you said, nothing to be done so I’d simply hope for the best. All that said, I have yet to hear of anyone being rescinded in the past 4 years.
“A nonrefundable enrollment deposit, which is applicable toward the first semester’s bill, is due by May 1st”
Does this mean I subtract the deposit from my first semester bill?
Yep!
@plexus Technically, NEU will subtract it from your bill. The bill you get is the bill you pay.
Thanks. As long as this mean I pay $600 less, im good. That’s a whole paycheck right there
So i’ll be a computer science and criminal justice major and i am deciding between CCIS LLC and politics, philosophy and economics LLC. I really like PPE but i also want to be within helping distance of my fellow CCIS classmates. What do ya recommend, and can i chose to live in Stetson East?
