asking admissions office if all materials were received

How can I do so without sounding too annoying?

If my file is incomplete (i.e. for some reason the high school transcript didn't arrive) will colleges notify me or will they just take the $65 and not even bother to consider my application?

depends. which schools are you applying to?

nyu took definitely took my 70 bucks last year and never even bothered to send me a decision letter. apparently one of my teachers didn't get the rec in on time and forgot to let them know that she was at fault. it's worth risking being annoying for a few minutes... admissions will just say it was your responsibility to make sure everything had been received.

Checking with the Admissions office is not a problem. But I understand the fear that they will put a "black mark" next to your name. They won't. Unless you actually become annoying ;).

Some schools have online trackers to see what the status of each item in your file is - thank God for them. Most don't. Some notify you by mail or email of what they have received.

Give them a little time - couple of weeks or so after the deadline and after you have submitted everything. Then, if you are concerned, call and ask for an Admissions staffer handling Transfer apps.

Simply ask if you can check whether your file is complete. You may be surprised that they haven't even started processing things yet. In that case, ask when it would be appropriate for you to check back.

If they indicate something is missing, be organized. Know what you submitted and when. Know whether, eg, College Board says they've sent your SATs; whether your hs/uni says it has sent the transcript and when. If things have been sent, but not received at the school, ask if you should wait a little longer (sometimes it's there, but hasn't made it through the system yet) or have the item re-sent.

Most admissions staff members, especially for transfers, are quite friendly and helpful. They're not quite as overwhelmed as with Freshman admissions.

It is wise, if you can hold off, to wait until a few days after April 1. They are inundated with Freshman admissions until then and then for a few days after handling phone calls from parents who can't believe Johnny didn't get in .
