Will I be able to change my major/college at the CalSo orientation, early in the game? I don't want to be stuck with the major for ANY semesters.

I applied under Architecture, but as each day passes, I regret it more and more.

My dad told me originally to choose the major because it utilizes a combination of physics + math + business, all subjects of which I love.

He also told me that I didn't need any artistic ability to excel in it, hearing this from his friends(Because I'm a HORRIBLE artist); this made me confidently choose architecture, but reading more about the major each day on CC, I'm beginning to have doubts.

That's what I thought, but as an architectural engineering major (emphasis on structural design), I had to take two semesters of architectural design. Gulp! I discovered that (1)artistic ability IS required for arch engineering majors, and (2) I do not have an artistic bone in my body. I barely pulled out a C my first semester, and somehow got a B second semester. It was a painful experience, but it did serve a purpose, because it me realize that architects ARE good for something, after all.

I'm planning to apply to pretty good grad schools, and this will probably eat up my GPA. I don't really have that much love for architecture anymore as I read more about it.

Anyways, will I be able to change my major(and college) before and if I start Berk?

What major and college would you prefer to switch into? It’s all relative to what college you’re talking about. Engineering and Haas are not possible.

Like fortify said, you should be able to switch into pretty much anything in L&S.

Well, I was picturing an architect as someone who already has a drawing and design laid out for him or her. All that person would have to do is make such a design a reality using his or her knowledge of the sciences. This wouldn’t really require any artistic ability. I suppose I should have done more research though.

I’m not sure what major in L&S would be applicable for me, but I’d probably just choose Mathematics(intended) until I’d be forced to choose a major.

I was also thinking of Chemical Engineering, but I’m not sure how hard it’d be to switch in. - And yeah, I’ve read about how hard Chem 4A/4B/Ochem can be, so I’m not just blindly considering this major as well.

I don’t know too much about architects, but it seems to me like the architect would be the one doing the drawings and designs, and structural engineers would focus on the more concrete stuff.

Don’t be too anxious. Many people change majors around all the time, and I feel you should at least give this architecture thing a try.

It hasn’t even been your first day, and you’re already worrying about how much of a fit this major will be. Right now, all you have is different perspectives.

Maybe you’ll find that your artistic ability inately develops thru the course of the major. Or, you’ll see the difference between creative and practical art.

So, stick to it and try it out for a semester. At worst, you’d have gotten a few electives. At best, maybe you will grow to like it after making your own decision.

The architecture program here is very strong, and it’d be a shame if you were to give it up after all that work of getting in.

Don’t stress, you are not required to take any architecture prerequisites during your first year (you are encouraged to take them, but no one is going to force you). Engineering is a different story and that scenario doesn’t apply to you.

Just hang out in CED during the first year and take the breadth requirement for L&S. You should be able to request to transfer to L&S Undeclared after the first year (maybe sooner, check with the department). Take a wide variety of courses for the breadth requirement, maybe you will find something you like to major.
