I just got my financial aid package and they gave me 21,924 (yes i am living on campus and they gave me three loans). However, I am a Barrett student and I know certain parts of Barrett are a bit more expensive than regular ASU…such as the dorms, meal plans (which are super expensive) and there is an honors fee. I am just wondering if what they gave me will also be enough to cover Barrett expenses. Anyone know from experience or has calculated the costs of Barrett? Just wondering what others got from ASU who are also Barrett students.

oh and anyone know when ASU posts housing assignments? I heard usually mid-april but I am not sure? Anyone?

My daughter got a letter telling her that she’s in the residential college for business about 2 weeks ago - the specifics of room and roommate don’t come until the summer. Perhaps her information came early because she is in one of the residential colleges - not sure about that.

nevermind, i got the obama scholarship and i have to call them in order to have them review my file so they can give me more aid since my COA is more than a regular ASU COA.

Anyone know if there is an obama scholarship or something similar for needy students who are not freshman? I got an automatic zero EFC due to low income.

How can you have the Obama scholarship but have three loans? I thought the Obama scholarship was money you did not have to pay back?

Specific questions about the Obama program should be directed to financial aid offices. The only thing I’ve heard is that if you are in the “Obama Scholar program” you should have grants and subsidized loans to cover the “basic” cost of attendance they pay for. Basic means the package they should outline on the letters you get if you are in the program - if you’re on a more expensive meal plan/dorm room, they will try to find more subsidized funding, grants, etc. but sometimes they might just have to offer other loans.

If you aren’t in the Obama Scholars program, there are grants they are offering. For the 2010-2011 year, I noticed (from a friend’s package that had an EFC of 0) there were more grants for undergrads not in the Obama program.

the obama scholarship program uses a sort of “equation” to figure the amount that they will give you. They figure out how much they will give you by taking your COA and subtract any scholarships and grants you get from the university along with your EFC. my efc was about 5600 and i got about that much in loans. My COA for ASU is a little higher than the regular in-state and living on campus cost only because I am a barrett student. The meal plans and dorms are more expensive. Thats why i had to call the obama scholarship program in order to have them review my file to give me more financial aid (which was nice because I didn’t think that they would actually encourage this). So the Obama Scholarship covers everything left after your efc (along with scholarships and grants from the univ.) is subtracted from your COA. The actual obama program gave me 6000 along with a 1200 book grant. the rest of the “free money” consisted of university grants, my merit scholarship and another scholarship i recently received. I got really lucky because I will be receiving the AIMS scholarship this summer which covers all of my tuition. So I won’t have to take any of the loans at all.

Of course, the obama scholarship is really nice for someone who has an EFC of 0!!

I’m an in-state transfer, so I am not a first time freshman, therefore I do not qualify for the Obama scholarship. I hope I qualify for something else though. The 5500 pell grant is nice but every bit helps.
