ASU Tempe vs Phoenix

I am a current high school senior who was recently accepted into ASU’s Cronkite school, which is located on the Downtown Phoenix Campus. I’m conflicted because I have a passion for sports journalism, but really want to live on the Tempe campus. Is it possible to live in Tempe but take my classes in Phoenix? ASU is my top choice, and if this is possible it’ll make my decision pretty easy.

My daughter is in the nursing program and lived in the dorms in Phoenix year 1 and is now living in Tempe. I hear great things about the journalism program at ASU and would encourage the dorms year 1 so you meet those in your major and you can get to class in 5 mins or less. Then Tempe after that. Good luck!

I am dumbfounded by young people who pursue Journalism in the 21st Century. It’s a dead career. Aside from the craze of bleached-blonde, cosmetically-enhanced women forced upon fans by the sports industry, there is no demand and no money in the field. Katie Couric is a blogger. The days of Cronkite, Brinkley, and Sevareid have long past.

What majors would you recommend? My goal is to be involved in the sports industry one day and I’ve always thought writing would be my best bet, but I’d appreciate if you could help me find other ways

ASU has a sports marketing degree as well and has a great business school. The business school on Tempe campus as well.

Don’t let people talk you out of journalism. While newspapers are dead, there are a lot more outlets for news today than there were 30 years ago. AI doesn’t write for the wire services, and some bloggers and journalists actually make a good living. There is also public relations and advertising, so I don’t agree with the premise there are no jobs in the space. Like many other fields, the starting pay won’t be high, but you can work your way up. Not everyone is destined for the STEM fields, and many people in business are not good writers. A journalism degree gives you a leg up on them.

If you are expecting big bucks working for a newspaper, give it a second thought. Just keep your options open.

Sports marketing is a good field to be in. You could combine a journalism degree with an MBA.

Original question: “Is it possible to live in Tempe but take my classes in Phoenix?”

Yes, it’s technically possible but it might be challenging to schedule your classes between Tempe campus and DT campus. You might be limited in what classes you take as you probably want to alternate between Temple and DT. For example, taking Tempe based classes on M, W, F and DT based classes on T, THR. If you plan on taking the free shuttle it will take longer than taking the Light Rail ($2/trip).
