Athletic Recruiting and the Waitlist

I know both these topics have been beaten to death individually, but a quick google search didn't yield me any info about athletic recruits who happen to be on the wait list. I am currently in this situation. I guess my question is: how equal are waitlistees? If athletic recruiting only differentiates otherwise equal applicants, then surely I must have some advantage, right? Anybody know how big it is, if there even is an advantage? Are there some waitlistees who are much better than others academically, thus rendering athletic recruiting useless? I mean, the wait list letter says we were "good enough, but they didn't have room." Thus, I'd think if another applicant and I are both "good enough" but I'll play sports, that must be beneficial, right? But then, everybody says athletics means nothing... Can anybody shed some light?

Thanks.

caltech does not recruit athletes; it shows an interest.

if it helps you think the way you have put it, so be it.

I would suggest finding something else that will strengthen your application when you send in updates and not just grades.

Sports are truly a non-issue in admissions.

slightly off topic but no point in starting a new thread:

for a waitlisted candidate who did not submit any AMC 12 scores, how much would updating 103.5 on the 12B (harder than usual) and 6-8 on the AIME help? these are “average” scores, but an application that already made it to the wait list would not need some huge boost, would it?

I believe that those are respectable scores and should be added to whatever else you submit. While I don’t have any waitlist experience, I think it’s better to send in one “big” update as compared to several small updates. No point in being annoying.

well, I wet the bed hard, made 5 silly mistakes, and got a 2 on the AIME.

obviously, this score is pretty bad and under normal circumstances would not be worth submitting. however, does being on the wait list change this? would it hurt me to send such a bad score when I’m on the borderline?

deep sigh I can’t believe I made silly mistakes on over 50% of the questions on the test…
