athletics question

Just out of curiousity, does anybody know why UIUC does not have a varsity men's soccer team? With 35,000 students you would think they could form a team of 15 to play soccer. geez

Interest is not high in the midwest for a game where a 2-0 lead early in the second half is considered insurmountable. Basically there are two reasons. UIUC has never mustered enough of a desire among administrators to create a men's soccer team partly because they don't believe the sport would pay for itself in attendance, and having a women's team and no men's team helps keep the balance of scholarships between men and women for all varsity sports that is needed for Title IX.

[Columbus, Ohio disagrees with you...

so does chicago...

and so does kansas city](http://columbus.crew.mlsnet.com/MLS/coc/) if you count that as the midwest.

we just lost our soccer team, the san jose earthquakes :( high international community and no soccer support here? yeish

we have a successful club team that plays schools from all over https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ro/www/IllinoisMen%2527sSoccerClub/

I'm almost positive its because of title nine. I'm pretty sure the mens club team is pretty good though

yeah i disagree with drusba's comment too. soccer may not be as popular as football or basketball but its still way more popular than some other sports out here. There are tons of people here with geniune interest in soccer. The rooms in the illini union with the big TVs are packed these days due to the world cup( too bad we got destroyed in the first game though) . Soccer would also be in a race with basketball for the most commonly played sport on campus here.
The only reason UI does not have a soccer team is coz they have some kind of a policy( title nine apparently) where they need to have an equal number of sports for men and women. Mens golf team is not "paying for itself in attendance" either but it still exists!. Adding soccer into mens sports would either mean they will have to somehow find another sport for women or take out one of the men's sports and both of these cases are very difficult to implement.
But yeah as GT3000 mentioned we have a club A team, club B team and then year round intermural soccer( indoors and outdoors). And you will easily find tons of hardcore soccer fans to watch the games with.
