Attend a good school but nobody understands? Post Here...

"is someone not recognizing your school really something you want to spend time worrying about?"

I think you are missing the point. I had fun reading through all these humorous stories and I think for most people the point of the thread is to share in these stories and laugh at them. Confusing Upenn with Penn State is an example. Furthermore I doubt any of the posters that posted their experiences geniunely "worry" about their name recognition. They are just sharing their own experiences and perhaps exposing a truth about the differences between CCers and the average individual out in the real world.

As someone going to a big, easily recognizable state school, I still find this thread amusing. Nobody in my area has heard of most Florida schools, and I have a friend going to Nova Southeastern. When she told me where she was going, I had to ask all kinds of basic and geographical questions--"So, where in Florida is that?" "Is it a big school?" etc, and we joked about how it was so much easier to be able to say State U. and have everyone be all, "Did you buy football tickets?"

there is a popular shirt sold in the connecticut college book store that says "Connecticut College. NOT UCONN."

kid in my graduation class:
him: where are you going to college?
me: princeton university
him: ??? where's that!?

i live in NJ by the way.

I get the "How DARE you go to school with those damn yankees" look. Southerners are truly some of the best ppl you'll ever meet...but still have some issues...and I'm saying this as a girl born and raised in the South.

Wait til you get to school in Mass. You will be spending your entire day trying to convince everyone you're not a hick, no matter where you are from in the South. It sucks.

Oh so true.

I have memories from NFL in Philadelphia that will last me a lifetime. Mostly really dumb (but hilarious) questions these two guys from Penn. kept asking me about the South. Eh, and then there were the others that were just completely rude and ignorant.

to whoever started this post. you must have some sort of problems. If this bothers you, you shouldnt be going to school anywhere but UCLA or Harvard. get over yourself and your schools "reputation",do you have self image issues? It's not anyones responbility to be aware of your school regardless of how "prestigious" it is.

I think the thread is funnyl I don't see thst the OP has any "issues", but is looking at it with humor, as are others

If you don't like a thread, gee, move on

It can be frustrating if you are proud of your school, have school spirit and all that, and people are clueless

Of course,no one here is letting that eat the up inside, not at all, and gosh, even the colleges themselves have a sense of humor about it

Nimesh, ligthen up!! Its okay to gripe and laugh and complain about something, it doesn't mean a person has self image issues...wow your attack was kind of strange

UCLA is the University on the Corner of Lexington Avenue

theres a lot of those.

Ha, my friend at the University of South Calorina is always making random remarks about it being the real USC.

Unless someone has gone through the college search process (as a student or as the parents of a student), he/she has little exposure to the 2,400 public and private four-year schools out there. This is especially true of LAC's. Outside of the tri-state area, most people, upon hearing that my daughter graduated from Hamilton, would say, "Uh - where's that again?"

My son is about to leave for Furman - the name draws blank stares from most of our friends and neighbors.

Rather than being irked and bothered about the ignorance, view it with amusement and as an opportunity to let people know about your school.

uni on the corner of lexington avenue=cuny hunter=UCLA

i going to quote my dad what he said tonight:
"People get confused w/ my alma mater and UCLA"-it was a joke but my mom was like huh? I Got it b/c hes told me b4 b/c he calls its ucla as a joke""

I know several ppl (including a girl who lives in Texas) who never heard of Rice... I was like "are you serious??"

And me for example... I goto USC but never heard of the school before I actually was recommended to apply there.. (like USC? where's that?)
And when ppl actually think about USC most ppl think "party school?" or "football?"

I guess i don't really blame ppl since i didn't know it either. lol. I did realize it's a pretty good school though especially for cntv and business and engineering.

But that's the thing. We never said it was their fault that they didn't know of our school. We just get annoyed nonetheless. (Don't you find yourself getting upset with people even though whatever was done may not be their fault?)Obviously though, we have some idea of the greatness of our school so I am sure if we TRULY wanted the name recognition, we could have applied elsewhere. For the people who DO want the immediate name recognition, it may come across as presumptious but what if it was Harvard we were talking about? We just automatically recognize and respect that name. Imagine saying you go to Harvard and people staring at you clueslessly?

The thing is, we think about how hard we worked to get into our school and sometimes, as humans, we want the validation. We want to hear, that's a great school. Personally, I am not looking for name recognition. I am quite content with my decision, as is everyone else here I would assume. :-D

When people ask me about what school I am going to, I don't assume they've heard of it, that is a bit obnoxious. Instead, I just say the name and the state in which it's located. I don't mention the rankings. I don't get upset with them for not knowing. Honestly, I could care less.

BUT, (oh yes, I'm famous for the buts), this was a topic for us to vent. It's not meant to come off as snobbish. We finally have a post in which a few of us can relate. Yes, we forget that not everyone knows of every school but we're just being honest. We really would like it if they did.

So far, none of us have approached this topic too seriously. It's really just funny and reassuring to know that you're not the only person thinking these things. So please, unless you can come up with a rational sounding argument for why we should lie and say that we are perfectly fine when people confuse our school, have no idea of our school or state incorrect facts about our school, remember this is college confidential. Confide your overheated arguments in another post. We already worked our ass off to get into a school we knew wasn't well known. Now let us vent.

claps.....

I go to UCSD and whenever I tell someone that they automatically think "party school" when it's ANYTHING but that. They're confusing it with SDSU? I hate it.
