Heh I'm from the south too but I'm asian so I don't get much of that "hick" comments... I lived in the South for most of my life and I love it XD yay for southerners~

^ oh yeah i get that comment too, only usc version..."USC? that party school?" (that's one comment i got from my friend signing my yrbook) unfortunately i'm not that much of a partier or a social person so i just get tired of hearing it...

i had two of my good friends from HS wrote have fun at BU in my yearbook. it is the most irritating thing in the world when people get BC and BU mixed up! or think BU is automatically better because its called "university". now when i say it they just say BC FOOTBALL!!.. which i love :)

if you had asked me a year ago what mit stood for i would've been like "what is that in michigan or something? minnesota?" and now it's my dream school =D

It's really funny that I found this thread...though I haven't applied yet some1 asked me the other day...

Them:So....what school would you like to attend?
Me: Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts....
Them: Where's that?
Me: South Hadley, Massachusetts....
Them: Oh, well since you want 2go out of state just make sure the school is accredited and everything...
Me: Oh yeah they've been around since like 1837...and they're nationally ranked every year....
awkward silence
Them: Oh...

I could have DIED laughing...I've known this lady since I was little and she tried to make it seem like I didn't know what I was talking about; of course I wasn't trying to be disrespectful, she kind of set herself up,lol.

"Where did you go to school?"
Lafayette College
so I get either...
"Oh, the one in Indiana?"
No - you are confusing that with Purdue, which is in West Lafayette
or...
"That's in Louisiana, right?"
No - but there is a University of Louisiana - Lafayette

Then I get..
"So where is Lafayette?"
Easton, Pennsylvania
"What town in Eastern Pennsylvania?"
Easton
"WHERE?"
EasTON - home of Larry Holmes and Crayola crayons
"Who is Larry Holmes?"
Now I am feeling really old!!!

It wouldn't be odd around my town or old HS. The only schools ever mentioned were the State Flagships (Alabama and Auburn), few State schools, and HBCUs. Until these forums, the only big school (I couldn't tell you what ivy league even meant) was Harvard in my mind. If you weren't at Harvard, chances were no one half cared what school you were at. If it was OOS, Good for you for being able to afford that.

A lot of responses in this thread put an image of snobbish kids in my head. It may not be true. Who really gets offended or annoyed if someone doesn't kiss you on your cheek and go "You smart kid you! You go to a good school, not all those other ones that would be so beneath you and your intelligence!" Would you like a cookie with extra sugar? Ha, I just don't get it. The only person that really has to think highly of or care about your school is you and your future employer.

I actually kind of like the fact that people around these parts don't know of the schools I'm interested in...it gives me sort of a quirky sense of pride and accomplishment, not because they're AWESOME but because of my willingness to go out of the typical relm of college choices. I'm not snobbish AT ALL,lol...that woman just tried to make it seem like certain schools weren't accredited if she hadn't heard of them(yeah RIGHT?!?!)...and like I didn't do my research(my friends label me the most resourceful and the most frequent "googler" of the group,lol)...

The woman who worked at my blockbuster asked which college I was going to. I told her "Berkeley." And she said, "Oh, ... I've never heard of it."

Most people outside of Berkeley don't know what "Cal" is. Heck, I didn't know what it was until I started touring colleges earlier this year.

But Easton is Eastern Pennsylvania ;)

Anyway, I was at BU. I got all the typical congrats on BC, how's BC, etc., etc. The best was (cant remember who said it):Where do you go? Boston University. Where's that? Boston, Massachusetts...

LOL I was talking to my best friend a month or so ago and she said:

"Which school in California do you go again? UCLA?"
me: "... Nuh uh. You. didn't. DON'T EVER CALL OUR SCHOOL THAT AGAIN OR YOU'LL HAVE SWARMS OF PEOPLE ATTACKING YOU WHEN YOU VISIT THIS PLACE!!"
ahahahaha. yeah USC and UCLA hate each other so that was pretty bad..

Yay UCLA USC game tomorrow... too bad I have too many papers to enjoy it.

I photocopied the top 50 (magazine rankings 2007) from USNWR and gave them to my parents to familiarize lol. Just in case.

I'm still in HS..my friend was at summer school, and someone pointed out 'massachusetts institute of technology'...and he was like what the heck is that?! 'MIT'

I saw a post earlier about going to NU. As in, Northwestern. I go to the other NU... NorthEASTERN. That's a fun one to explain.

I could have gone to a more name-brand school that arguably has a better reputation, would have saved me some questions about how Chicago is treating me. But I love my school, so I don't mind it. Plus the reaction is always positive when I tell people it's in Boston.

To be honest, up to this day, my parents are still so amazed that I was very interested in Washington University in St. Louis. :p
I don't think they would have paid for me to go there, unless I bombarded them with data which showed the greatness of WUSTL.
