saw a post earlier about going to NU. As in, Northwestern. I go to the other NU... NorthEASTERN. That's a fun one to explain.

I could have gone to a more name-brand school that arguably has a better reputation, would have saved me some questions about how Chicago is treating me. But I love my school, so I don't mind it. Plus the reaction is always positive when I tell people it's in Boston.

boooooooooooooo damn your school and your hockey team :P

Going out of state to another state school is pretty bad. Whenever I come home for visits and such and I go out with friends people will ask where do I go to school...before I can answer, someone else will say "oh he goes to Georgia" then I have to correct them and say I go to Georgia Tech. Then for the rest of the night I'll have people asking me how either Georgia, Georgia Tech, or Virginia Tech (a lot of kids from Maryland go to VT, so people mix it up a lot) is. Absolutely no one has ever hear of the Georgia Institute of Technology, which is the same thing...and God forbid I actually say that GT is better than University of Maryland at anything.

Pretty much no one knows about my school College of the Atlantic, and it's understandable. There's only 300 students, most shun technology, and it's on an island in Maine. Heck, our major is one of the hardest and ambigous ones ever to explain, Human Ecology.

But it's such an amazing school, and it is sometimes frustrating that people do not recognize how much effort is needed for such an intimate community. Well, I didn't go to this college for recognition anyway, so I'll manage. :P

My friend: Hey Dad! (my name) is going to Mount Holyoke!
Her dad: Is that good?

I think that some people here believe that the only good schools are Harvard, Yale, NYU, Columbia, and Binghamton. Stonybrook has a lot more recognition here. Even Hofstra is "better" because they know the name.

So far, I've gotten about 10 responses of "Oh, so where's this Northwestern? In the Northwest?" and about another 10 responses of "That's great. You'll love BOSTON. Northeastern is wonderful!" The funniest is when people are just like "Oh... gives blank stare" And yet these people have all heard of Loyola Marymount (LMU), Chapman University, and Occidental College... none of which I am familiar with. Are they even ranked? O.o

A family friend of mine played baseball at Laf and really liked it. I've never visited and cant really give too much info, but it's a very well respected school in the area.

So my sister and her boyfriend go to the movies and expect to get like a 3 dollar discount for being a student. He goes to Ualbany and she goes to Carnegie Mellon. They both hand their ID cards but only her boyfriend gets the discount. She goes back and asks the lady and she says "why didn't I get a discount." and the lady replies "How do I know thats a real school" woooooow...

i don't really care if ppl know where syracuse university is or not. surprisingly, there are a lot of ppl who just really don't know where syracuse is. whenver i mention that i go to Syracuse U, i throw in "in upstate New York," just to make sure that they get that it's not in florida somewhere..lol. also, i get those ppl who ask me questions like "so you must love the hustle and bustle of nyc right?" and im like, "i live in upstate ny NOT nyc..." lol

I go to Occidental, and I always get two responses:
1) Is that a dental school?
2) Did you get in accidentally?

Also, there are always cracks having something to do with the oxy face cleaner or spot cleaner. Ugh. At least I know I'm going to a better school than 95% of the people who ask me these stupid questions, haha.

I'm only applying to schools within 2 hours of my house, so I would pretty horrified if someone in my general vicinity didn't recognize all of them instantly.

Although my dad did ask me about Tufts once:
Me: "So I'm applying to (list schools)... and Tufts."
Dad: "Tufts?"
Me: "Oh, yeah, I dunno if I'll get in, but--"
Dad: "Where's that?"
Me: utterly dumbfounded "... Medford."
Dad: "Medford as in Medford?"
Me: "Yeah, dad. We used to live like 10 minutes away. And its pre-med program is supposed to be amazing."
Dad: "Really? Could've fooled me."

Oh, deary dear. The man's only lived in Massachusetts for, what, 40 years?
