So far, I have a 1170 SAT (I took it half asleep and I skipped the essay portion) and a 27 Composite (27s in everything). However, I'm currently a National Achievement Semi-Finalist and I'm pretty sure I'll become a Finalist since I have a lot of service hours and wrote an awesome essay. I plan on retaking the SAT (and taking it seriously this time) on Oct. 10th and getting at least a 1250. I have a 4.06 GPA and I'm in the IB Program.

Please answer one or more of these honestly:

What are the odds of me getting an invitation into the Honors program?

What are the odds of me getting this National Achievement FSU Scholarship (according to some students and a lady in admissions, there is one) if I do become a finalist or any other kind of merit-based scholarships?

Oh and if there are any need-based scholarships that I'm unaware of, my mom is a single parent and makes less than $30,000 a year.

Yeah, honors… and before you go all ‘lol u dumb’, I hope you realize that it’s “honors” and not “honor’s.”

How do I find out my FSU weighted GPA other than contacting the admissions desk? I emailed them about a week ago about it. I just checked the site (Thanks for the link btw), and apparently I can petition to get in with my current scores.

Oh and that 1170 was only counting the critical reading and math sections btw. It’s a 1770 total, and I took it again last Saturday so I’m pretty sure I’m past the 1850 mark now.

This is how FSU and most of the state schools in Florida calculate their GPA, using academic courses only.

Since FSU and most of the state U’s require the writing portion, quoting an SAT number that is CR and M only will cause confusion, as most are reporting all three, or reporting it as 1170/1600 for clarification.

The odds of getting an initial INVITATION are, I think, none. As far as sending out invitations, it’s purely a numbers game. If you don’t have the qualifications, you will not get an invitation, regardless of your other specs, pure and simple.

However, you could always APPEAL to get into the Honors program; when you appeal, they will consider you holistically, as opposed to just a conglomeration of numbers.

yeah what about me, i have 4.1 core and 28 on act and am in the science technology engineering and math program at my school, though all i learned was that i don’t want to go into a science field haha. i know you need a 29 on act but if i have the gpa qualification and the close act score, will i get an invitation? i think i can get into if i apply but i was just wondering if they’d invite me.

Thanks to both parent2noles and Write On. I’ll be sure to appeal ASAP.

Oh and another somewhat relevant question… I received numerous letters from places like Harvard and Texas A&M offering me scholarships if I mark them as my “first college choice” for the National Achievement Program. I put FSU on there (I can change it though), but I’m thinking about switching it even though I really just want to go to FSU. Do you know if FSU offers anything because of that or if I’m better off just putting one of the schools offering me $50,000 scholarships as my first choice even though I only want to go to FSU?

If you are a Florida resident and have National Merit status you get extra money from Florida State. FSU will no longer “buy” out-of-state NM students, but they will support Florida residents - in addition to other scholarships you may qualify for.

I’d set up a personal appointment with Admissions and show them your credentials (transcript, scores and any other relevant academic records).

You don’t have to be a student to ride the bus, nor do you have to go round trip from FSU. For example, you can go round trip from Orlando or Fort Lauderdale. My son has never used them, but I’ve heard good things about this service.
