ATTN: To all that are borderline 3.0 uw this semester

Yes, this is a saddening story that is going to scare most of you ****less, but I figured that I might as well share.

An associate/friend/person thing of mine got his admission to Cal REVOKED due to his poor first semester grades. He had a gpa of about 2.67ish uw, and it wasn’t entirely his fault–he had broken his arm and it was hard for him to keep up with the grades. Even so, he DID NOT get any D’s or F’s, just Cs and Bs… so, being the diligent person he is, he wrote to the university, explaining his situation and awaited a response.

The university yesterday replied saying that they have REVOKED his admission, and do not give his circumstances any weight.

As you can imagine, he is utterly crushed by this situation–Cal is his dream school, he’s worked super hard for it, and he’s an EECS major like myself; personally I think it harsh and cruel of them to reject him outright just like that based on just one semester’s grades. He did not even send an official transcript of his first semester grades, he just sent a letter describing the situation. At any rate, he is appealing, but being how hyper-competetive the College of Engineering, we honestly don’t think he stands much of a chance.

So, if your grades are borderline this semester, do yourself a favor and WORK YOUR ****ING ASS OFF. You don’t want to jeopradize your admission over this.

As for myself, I’ve chosen UCSD Bioengineering over UCB EECS, because I can! 3.0 weighted, here I come!

I have like a 2.8 uw right now.

****.

i chose ucb bioE over ucsd bioE. but there are other factors that make me decide on this.

and why did he get revoked for a 2.7 gpa?

edit: oh, you are talking about senior year in high school.

Because the conditions of admission clearly state that you have to get a 3.0 unweighted all terms of your senior year, bar no circumstances.

Even if you broke your arm, or contracted cancer, or got hit by a meteor along the way.

But I've heard MANY stories of people writing in, explaining their broken arm, their cancer, and their meteor hit, and getting their revokement overturned. You write a letter explaining your circumstances, have your head counselor write a rec, and supposedly they overturn your revokement.

Cal EECS is very competitive, if he cannot get above a 3.0 then he doesn't deserve to go to cal. I don't care if his dick was chopped off, he does NOT deserve to go to cal if he did not follow the admission requirements.

i guess this thread is talking to me =/

"Cal EECS is very competitive, if he cannot get above a 3.0 then he doesn't deserve to go to cal. I don't care if his dick was chopped off, he does NOT deserve to go to cal if he did not follow the admission requirements."

Dude, if I had my dick chopped off, I'd have more important things to worry about than whether or not I'd be going to Cal.

Seriously, though, I think that attitude is a little harsh. I know a guy who's taking 5 APs this year. He shouldn't have the same reqs as someone who's taking 5 regulars. I think it should be a 3.0 w.

"Seriously, though, I think that attitude is a little harsh. I know a guy who's taking 5 APs this year. He shouldn't have the same reqs as someone who's taking 5 regulars. I think it should be a 3.0 w."

He would of kind of dug his on grave on that, his fault

dang that sucks. but i heard of that happening for other schools too. maybe his hs teachers can help him out?

All the other UC's are 3.0 weighted, with the exception of UCLA and Cal. He talked to teachers about it--most aren't too sympathetic. He's taking about 5 APs this year also, but thats not uncommon for him--he's a smart guy.

That's why he got into EECS.

But at any rate, this story is extremely surprising, even to a Mr Jaded like myself. The amount of information they based their revokation on was more or less a letter sent to the university by my friend/associate, not even an official transcript! For all they know, he could be lying, and send in a follow-up note that says "Just Kidding!"

Odd.

I barely make it.

I have 18 credits out of a possible 24....so .75 X 4 = 3.0....gulp

"I don't care if his dick was chopped off,"

I think they should accept him just out of pity.

I don't get how breaking an arm affect your grade, but I still feel sorry for this guy. I think this serves as a reminder for all of us to follow the admission guidelines....

I think colleges still want you to be competitive in school and earn good grades, EVEN THOUGH IT's ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS. Oh well, A stands for Adequate! Right?

:P

Definitely my sympathies to him; he should appeal.

UCSD only requires a 3.0 weighted even for bioengineering?

I think colleges still want you to be competitive in school and earn good grades, EVEN THOUGH IT's ABSOLUTELY MEANINGLESS. Oh well, A stands for Adequate! Right?

not if you plan to go to med school or graduate school.

Yup. Upon hearing of this story, the first thing I did was called and asked. The nice lady on the other side said 3.0 WEIGHTED, for ALL majors!

Yahoo!

so your friend is okay?

I think starman is referring to my question about UCSD bioengineering majors only needing a 3.0 weighted. UCLA and berkeley still require 3.0 UNweighted gpas in your senior year.
